as for getting started, the best way i found was to play bot matches, until i could constistently win on all star setting, perform the training mode everyday, watch youtube videos on basics, play an ungodly amount of casual, as casual is just a practice ground, no penalty for mistakes there, i highly suggest turning chat off as it just allows kids to try and flame you, alot, its much nicer with it off, i can focus and playing and having fun.
mostly its about playtime, the more you play, the more you can control your car, expect to be a nub for at least a few hundred hours of playing
Posted this in another thread about a 8 months ago in response to someone having similar issues I hope it helps you I know it says that I am gold below but i have advanced beyond that to diamond so you can improve and enjoy the game it just takes time and practice:
Op ignore everything on the forums as a new player, and i mean everything. Go through the in game tutorial, play some local games against bots. Dont worry about ariels or dribbling or anything that you just cannot do yet. Your first goal should just be to learn the physics of the game and the basic mechanics of playing with the ball on the ground. Once you start to figure that stuff out against the bots then you are ready to move into multiplayer. There you will start to learn about basic things like positioning and rotation, and you will learn more about them by making mistakes then anything anyone tells you.
The fun will come, I was like you at first bought the game played it a few times and stopped for a few months. When i came back i found the hockey which at the time was casual and not ranked. The puck would stay on the ground alot more than the ball so i learned the things i am telling you to learn by playing bots. Once i reached a point where i had all of that down I knew that to improve i had to learn how to get the car up in the air.
Currently i am a gold/plat player verging on getting into plat/diamond (dependent on mode) with just the basics and ariels. The vast majority of players in the lower ranks think they are way better than they really are so when playing multiplayer keep in mind most times what you get blamed for is not your fault, you know when you make a mistake if you are self aware and you know when your temaates make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes even pros, the difference being that as you get better you start to make less mistakes.
CHANGE these before you get used to using the default ones. Do NOT use default controls / camera settings / sensitivities / deadzones. They need to be adjusted.
This video covers controller settings, but you should also check out sensitivity / deadzone / camera videos
