Disappointed with the way mmr is carried over
My buddy did something dumb last season. He ranked up with a grand champ when he was new. His MMR was so high, he couldn't even play ranked 2's or 3's all last season.

What we don't understand is that it's a new season now. We lost all 10 games during the new ranking process (of course--he's really only silver, and we were playing champs)

When we were done ranking, he was still diamond 3. His mmr had lowered but only about 10 points a game. We calculated that he will need to lose about 70 games with no wins to get his mmr down to normal at this rate. If someone loses 10 out of 10 ranking games, why would the game rank them as diamond 3? He barely touched the ball in 10 games. The other players who played much better then him came in with a much lower rank.

We don't understand why mmr is carried over from season to season. Why not start each season fresh?

Any advice for my friend? The idea of throwing 70 games doesn't sound fair to whoever he is playing with, and he can't play with his MMR the way it is now. Waiting for the season to end is apparently not an option unless I'm missing something.

Because they weren't simply 10 losses, they were losses against champions. So he deranked a little bit with each loss, not a lot. Imagine a real champion who loses all his ten games, for whatever reason, as suddenly gets placed in Silver.

As for soft vs har reset, both have disadvantages. Ranking up takes skill AND time. With a hard reset you'd have lots of good players in the lower ranks for a very long time.

Because otherwise, it would be total hell for like 2 months until everyone's level is back to "Normal". Imagine if literaly everyone has hard-reset. That would make games with GMs, Silvers and diamonds, all mashed together. Not only your friend still wouldn't touch the ball, cause there are Champs+ in the match, but now, NO silvers at all, in the entire world, will touch for the ball for the next 2 weeks until champs/GC naturally increase in ranks and finally fight other Champs.

Not only that, but for most people, it's simply not fun to steamroll after like 10 games. People go in rank to fight people of their own skill levels. If Champs now have to face silvers/gold for 2 weeks, they will lose any motivation to play.

*I'm saying "Champs/GC", but this apply to basically all ranks.

Your buddy made a dumb thing, and now he will pay for it. Unfortunate, but learn from this. Best advice I have is make a new account, or deal with it.

You guys make good points. I'm not sure how other games get away with the hard-reset then. Like Halo for instance...hard resets are never a problem. If a GC loses all 10 games against other GC's he deserves big demotion and an uphill climb. Why not?

And as far as my buddy living with his mistake. He's mostly oblivious, it's all his friends who are really paying the price. We never wanted to play with champs. All in good fun though.

Despite what some people claim, there are big skill gaps between ranks. I'm C2/3 nowadays and if I happened to lose all or most of my placement matches, it would make no sense to put me in Gold for example. Because they have been losses against C2/3 players. If my 10 games had been against C1 layer I would probably win all 10 without a sweat.

But that's just an example. Who you are playig against matters a lot in this.
