Controller thumb stick wear & durability
Hello,

I've been using an Xbox one controller to play RL for the past year. I got 200+ hours during that time. As you know skill in this game is achieved through building muscle memory and i've been doing that with my controller. The thing is; the quality on these controllers is HORRIBLE! The thumb sticks start drifting as soon as 3 months in for some people. Mine did too i guess but i didn't notice until it got so bad that it became unplayable.
Long story short; i got a new controller. Now my skills are useless. I was solidly in Plat II and now i can't hit anything because the steering is different. I have no problem practicing to get back to where i was but i do not look forward to the thumbstick going downhill so i will have to do the same thing again in 6 months...

To get to my point.. If you wouldn't mind sharing with me your controller experience. I'm looking for a controller with the same layout as the Xbox One (so no Playstation) and the same thumbstick precision (so no 360). I play with the deadzone at 0.10 which is low so i'm explicitly looking for controllers with thumbsticks that do not SUCK!

Thank you :)

I went from 360 => XOne => PS4.

Both XBOX controllers broke ridiculously quickly. I had multiple issues with them, including buttons not working and something inside must've been really f'd up, because the stock cable wasn't working anymore but replacing it by any other cable didn't work either.
To be honest, the switch to PS4 controller wasn't hard at all, and I haven't had any issues with it so far. It's the only thing I could recommend. XBOX controllers just straight up suck.

Was using xbox 360, at the end had to set my deathzone to 0.30 XD
Using ps4 controller since around a year and still play with deathzone set to 0.05, no issues so far.

I can't really recommended any xbox style controller, never used another than xbox 360. Switching to ps4 controller was pretty easy, took maybe a week to get used to it and for my opinion feels better than xbox style controller but that's just my opinion.

A friend uses a xbox style Razer controller and he always tells me how good it is but i already saw many people complaining about it. I guess it all depends on taste.

I tested 360, one, steam controler, ps4... same durability. It's rocket league. U just have to relax. It will save ur controler, and improve ur skills. True story. U can easily buy xbox one sticks on amazon for exemple. There are even metal ones. Its easy to replace.

It's not the 'stick' that breaks it is the mechanism inside. There's nobody that goes easier on their controller than me. The sticks develop drift after so many months, that is a known thing with One controllers.

Anyhow i might give PS4 controllers a chance then.. I guess i don't have a choice.

My question remains though does anybody know of any durable xbox style controllers?

Make sure your deadzone prevents any drift when the stick is in neutral position?
The problem I have with xbox controllers is that I keep wearing out the rubber coating on the left stick.. I've started taking the controllers apart and swapping the sticks over. Fiddly job but at least I get twice the lifetime out of them.

with those you won't have this issue at all :D I use them on my ps4 controller and there are higher and lower variations of it, with a longer cap you get an even more accurate control of your car.

Hey, yah I saw those.. Have you tried them? I wondered if they'd feel ok to play with regards slipping off etc. I'm pretty rough with my stick.. :/

It depends, some are bad and remove easily and others won't remove that easily even if you are a bit rough. Also need to check about the grip, some are just smooth and others have more grip.

I tried those for example, they doesn't have a good grip even if they aren't just completly plain but they are to hard.

Those for example give a bit more grip because of the middle part which isn't just flat.

The higher they are the easier they will remove if you are to rough. Just small ones to protect the stick won't remove at all.

The whole point is i'm not going to turn up the deadzone. I don't have to. Other people play for years with PS4 controllers andt heir deadzone is at 50% of mine. The poor quality of the Microsoft thumbstick mechanism is at fault here.

Ok then.

Tried cleaning the mechanism with a bit of alcohol? Probably your finger grunge clagging them up.

U can replace the mechanism too. U want to get rid of it so why not give it a try ?

Because i would have to buy a soldering set, solder the old one out and the new one back in.

Grunge does not cause stick drift. Are you familiar with the term? When i steer with the leeft stickt and let go it will not return to it's normal default position. It's loose not clagged.
