What download speed do I need to play this game without lag?

Probably around 500kb/s or more..
Not the connection per se but things like packet loss, UPnP have a great impact.
You have to know how to set up a router for gaming and have all background garbage processes turned off.

Or you can just plug the router in and be fine as is the case with pretty much anyone. Port Forwarding is a thing of the past

Well I'm trying to decide if I need a new USB wifi adapter, for reasons I won't go into I don't have the ability to directly wire my PC to the wifi. My laptop gets a normal connection in the same spot as my PC.
I don't know that he was speaking about port forwarding but he is correct about packet loss. Most consumer routers don't need anything special to be used for gaming. The connection should have the lowest latency you can get. Also, play the region in which you live. You want the least latent connection to the server to allow for clean UDP packet flow. Once those packets arrive late (or never), you become a rubber band.
