∞ INFINITY MODE 2.0 THREAD ∞
I have been trapped in the Willamette Parkview Mall for over 50 days in infinity mode. Here is everything I have noticed is different from OG, give or take accuracy in minor details.
  • Frank's watch and camera are now enabled. For some reason though you can't change the batteries of the camera still, so you get only 100 photos per run.

  • Hunger bar changed to be a square shaped meter surrounding the level number. Much easier to see which pixel exactly Frank dies on.

  • PP gain is also enabled, and so are most methods including environmental bonuses and photography. Theoretically you could now do a level 1-50 run in infinity mode, as frustrating as it is.

  • The ability to "suspend" infinity mode has been added. When you suspend it will save and then force you to quit, when you load you return where you left off and the last save gets deleted. You're only allowed 1 infinity mode save slot at a time, separate from your other slots.

  • Time can now be sped up at any save point, when you speed up time your health drain increases to match. Lv. 50 Frank starves to death after 4 in-game hours, so you still need to collect food and stop speeding up time to eat. Naturally, Frank just dies if you let the health meter drain to zero while speeding up time.

  • NPC schedules and item drops are now randomized every run and rotate forever. Sometimes you can start runs with literally no NPC's for hours or close to a day. Sometimes multiple NPC spawns can trigger at the same time in the same zone. The chances of good food dropping from them go down the longer you survive.

  • NPC's are now marked on the map after they spawn. Or show which zone they are in, more specifically. This makes it very easy to speed up time but not miss chances for food. Be aware that they can not spawn in the same zone that Frank is in though, you have to re-enter that area to know.

  • Cultists and Special forces start to spawn on day 2 and 3. They ignore zombies and consider you the #1 enemy. Neither can capture you, but soldiers will patrol constantly which makes camping in one spot dangerous, even in restrooms.

  • Zombies, cultists and special forces have a chance to drop a box with a single item now. The item can be literally anything in the game including food, useless junk, rocket launchers, boss weapons...

  • Food in particular from zombies drops more often when Frank's health is under 50% health, and drop VERY often when under 25%. Snacks, spoiled meat, cookies and other low tier food is most common. Cultists and Specials forces have a higher chance to drop food like Steak, OJ, Pizza etc. This all means an aggressive and more risky play style can give you a constant supply of food if you really don't want to just stand around.

  • Infinite weapon durability book from the saint achievement is allowed if it is unlocked. The OP strat is to use it with the heavy machine gun and rocket launcher at low health for constant food drops. Yup, it's cheating, but there is no leaderboard and you could just not use it.

  • The "timer" you see during load screens is misleading, stating what day you are currently on rather than what you already survived. Your true survival time is actually -1 day from whatever the load screen says. Can be confusing why the achievements don't pop up if you don't notice that already. The death screen shows the correct time.

REGARDING CRASHES/BACKING UP SAVE FILES

Edit: since the last couple patches I haven't crashed anymore in the usual trouble spots. Nonetheless, here is where the save data is located in case you want to back up anyway:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[USER ID]\2527390\remote

ENSURING YOUR ACHIEVEMENT REWARDS ARE KEPT:

There are many reports of people not being able to use their laser sword or boxers in future sessions after completing 5/7 day survivor. There could be bugs, but this mostly seems to have to do with confusion caused by how the save system works.

Keep in mind that challenges and rewards are saved per slot. If you complete a challenge and get a reward it is only unlocked on the current save, not others. Infinity mode exists in its own save slot, the achievement on steam does not matter. So when you die in infinity mode make sure you say "Yes" to saving the game when prompted. Then make a new game using the "CLOSED" infinity mode slot and the rewards will transfer.

Some people are saying they don't get the prompt to save however, so If you want to play it safe get 5/7 day survivor but DON'T DIE, suspend and save infinity mode, then start a new 72 hour run using that already existing infinity mode save. Make copies of this save and your rewards should be safe no matter how your run ends.
(thanks mjc0961 for this workaround!)

Speeding up time is the biggest joke, closely followed by saving.

Neither makes a difference besides impacting the player's real life. Frank is still standing still and feeding himself, but time skip is a more interactive way to do that. IMO the challenge should be within the context of the game, not real life, so suspending to resume where you left off later is fair.

Yes, 7 day survivor goes by faster now, but that doesn't really make it easier within the actual game and the mode isn't just about the achievements either. As soon as the special forces stun lock you when you need to gather food again you realize it's actually harder and more risky than OG, you're just splicing out the "stand around when your inventory is full of food" bits.

There is an appeal to the old infinity mode, but at the end of the day the best way to play it was by not playing the game and it wasn't actually infinite. Most people will like this version better I wager, it's significantly less boring and gives plenty of choice. Hopefully the crashes get fixed and it will be more reasonable to invest into a run longer than 7 days.

Most of my hours in DRDR are in Infinity mode currently, so here's all the changes I've seen:

- Frank's watch and camera are now enabled

- PP gain is now enabled, meaning a level 1 to 50 infinity mode run is now possible and all the normal methods to collect PP also function.

- The ability to "suspend" infinity mode has been added. When you suspend the game will save and then force you to quit, when you load you return where you left off and the last save gets deleted.

- Time can now be sped up at any save point. When you speed up time your health drain also increases to match, so you still need to collect food and have it ready

- Survivor and psycho spawns are now randomized every run and so are their drops. They can also spawn past day 8 now.

- Survivors and psychos appear on the map now after they spawn so you can make up routes on the fly

- Cultists and Special forces get added to the mix on day 3 and team up with the zombies

- Zombies, cultists and special forces have a chance to drop a box with a single item now. The item can be literally anything in the game including food, rocket launchers, boss weapons, and even the heavy machine gun

Other notes:

- food placed in the mall doesn't respawn still like in OG

There appears to be a moderate chance of randomly crashing when you switch areas, especially after day 4 or so. You lose your save after a crash, so if you wish to backup your save data after suspending here's the directory:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[USER ID]\2527390\remote\win64_save
Thank you for this list!

Was on day 5 - 23 Hours and the game crashed while trying to go into Crislip's, lost the run... Next attempt I'm going to backup my file regularly, thanks for the tip about the save directory :DawnHearts:

Agreed, had a couple of really close calls after day 4, I've never been in a similar situation in the OG while doing 7 Day Survivor.

My first crash was in Crislip's too. Hard to tell if there is a specific survivor spawning that causes crashes, but in future runs I'll just avoid it anyway.

I am having an issue where despite backing up the save, it still doesn't show up in my list to load for infinite mode after moving it back. Tried with cloud save off as well.

edit: just make sure to have an infinity mode slot already existing before you swap the backup

My first and only crash was around day 4, soon to be 5. I left the security room into the entrance plaza and had a LOT of texture issues and severe frame dropping/freezing. I couldn't manage to suspend the session before it crashed.

There's a chance the game thinks your backup save is the one you crashed with (i.e "died") and deletes it upon boot. My bad for not bringing it up.

To be extra safe next time:

1. Only interact with the save files while the game is closed

2. Once the game does crash - boot it up again right after and confirm the infinity
mode save is gone. This might prevent it from deleting the backup.

3. Close the game, restore your backup

4. Boot the game and press "continue" (not load game)

I backup the entire win64_save and restore it, not sure if it matters. If that doesn't work then I'm afraid we're at the mercy of waiting for a patch. It's unfortunate because this mode is very fun when it works properly, even after day 7.
I forgot to report back, the backup ended up working after restarting the game 3 times randomly, so not sure why it wasn't reading it, but it eventually did.

Any idea what the root path for that save would be on a Linux system like Steam Deck? I tried to find saves for another game recently (Lollipop Chainsaw) but eventually gave up and just replayed everything.

Steam deck and linux are totally foreign to me, hopefully someone knows.

Infinity mode is great. Until it crashes. I was on Day 4, Hour 20, and My game crashed. Several hours put into it and I lost all that progress towards 5 day survivor :(

Patch is coming sometime* hopefully. There's a branch on steamdb being worked on that is more up to date than the version they released.

Don't think I'm gonna even attempt Infinity Mode until all these crashes are fixed. Hope a patch comes soon!
