Use medical kit?

I have some medical kits. How do I actually use them? New to this game.

They are used automatically on the road if characters can be healed, and the events will show up in the character BLURBs

How many medkits used are based on how good someone is with the medical skill in your party. They are used automatically but if you don't have enough it will show someone tried to help but did not have the supplies necessary to do so.

[Reprogrammed Automaton]

Medkits cannot be used "on-the-fly." They are only used once you're back on the road.
