Coming from experience, molotovs are WAY more trouble to deal with then the little bit of good they do. Severall times I've set myself on fire throwing one at point blank range into a zombie. Before the tweaking to the AI teammates (haven't tried it since recent update though), I've had them actually run INTO the fire and killed themselves. Even running back and setting them on fire doesnt really kill them at all. The current state of the molotov is that it's too ♥♥♥♥♥♥ to use and its better off never picking them up until they get buffed to actually kill zombies.

So grenades and pipe bombs I use to clear hordes that are following me. Molotov's I use to clear hordes ahead of me, in areas I haven't been yet. Basically, if you're going from A to B and B has a ton of zombies, throw a molotov first. You'll get the zombies to run thru the fire to you, hopefully killing some and injuring all.

This is, however, a VERY niche situation, as you don't really want to use them indoors, ever, and the amount of places where you need to clear large groups of zombies in an area you're moving to (as opposed to away from) AND is outside are rare. That being said, if you have room and you grab them, they can come in handy, you just have to be insanely careful.

The one time I've used molotovs it killed the person who threw it, the person it was supposed to save was killed, and while I was distracted with that another person was eaten by the zombies it was again suppose to kill.

So long story short, you probably shouldn't use molotovs, the only time I'd say it'd be safe to use it is if you have the Knight on a run alone.

In my experience they aern't really worth messing with that much, you're much more likely to light yourself and your buddies on fire than zombies. My advice though is if you see some sitting on the ground be aware and grab them before the AI does. In the previous patch the AI will kill themselves trying to throw them (I don't know about now).

In the past I've had one of the A.I.'s throw a grenade at a LONE zombie, then afterwards decides to run up to the zombie(mind you standing right on the grenade before it detonates)and bashes it once with his meelee before the grenade went off killing him.
Long story short, you're the only responsible adult.

AI is really bad about explosives, or any throwable really.

Molotovs need some sort of revamp at this point, I think. They're simultaneously near worthless and sometimes overpowered. If you get a lucky chain reaction, you can take down an entire packed grocery store with them. I'd like to make them more reliable, but probably get rid of the rare cases where one might kill 300 zombies.
I didn't even know the molotovs could kill the zombies. I thought they just put them in a weakened state-ish
