One Controller seen as 2 separate players

I'm trying to play on PC with my xbox controller but anytime I try to use the controller it has the selection box for p1 and p2 overlapping. That means that any input I make is entered twice (when it even registers).

I have never had an issue with the controller with other games. I could still play using only keyboard but I really like the comfort of a controller.

Any suggestions how to fix this? maybe a way to disable multiplayer entirely so that it won't matter?

Nevermind. under properties > controllers > there is a setting to "Enable steam inputs". I did that to override the default game settings and that did it for me
