Death Road to Canada

Death Road to Canada

View Stats:
5 hours of attempts, and I always die one of two ways
1) I end up in a 'siege' situation, with MASSIVE crowds, in a small area, and I just get mowed over
2) I run out of food, even though I loot ever single area, and don't spend anything at traders.

I'm starting to not like this game, these seem like pretty lame ways to die.

Any tips for success?

Making a starting character with good fitness (like a fighting build) is good for beginners. For a secondary character, having a Paranoid or Charming helps for a lot of events.

You can find a lot of food in Yall Marts or groceries and some convenience stores. To expand above, Paranoid characters can avoid paying food tolls to bandits and prevent losing loot when fire breaks out.

I'm guessing you have gone far enough to get massive crowd sieges. In that case, having a crew of at least three people helps a lot. Your main fighter should be able to handle a lot of the killing with proper melee pacing. Try to stock on light melee weapons with less breakage like aluminum bats, meat cleavers, hatchets, etc. If there are no light weapons, hammers are a bit heavier but good alternatives. Guns are more helpful when you sense you're not killing enough and start to get overwhelmed. I can't teach you about movement, but just be aware that there's a movement pattern to zombies that you can lure them in a bunch to minimize getting pincered.

The last tip is subjective: dying is part of the fun. Every event is a stat check, every death is a learning experience and you get to see a lot of the game contents through wrong choices. I had almost 20 hours worth of playtime deaths before I first reached Canada. 60 hours in, and I beat Kepa mode. You will eventually beat it too.

As a side note, it's normal to not have won the game after only 5 hours of play. You don't know what stats the event checks for, you don't know what the locations are, you don't know what characters are good or not, your character Perks are unleveled, etc.

Massive crowds of zombies... unfortunately, they're a built-in weakness when there's only a single type of enemy in the entire game; the only way to add more difficulty is to add more zombies and restrict player movement. I personally hate the way the action has been implemented, so I won't disagree with you there.

However, while crowds are not fun, they act as a "resource management" check. Either you, over the course of the game, successfully gathered the means to not get overwhelmed (chainsaw, automatic weapon with loads of ammo, loads of pipe bombs, or a maxed melee character with a great weapon)... or you failed to gather those means and you were dead all along, the siege just lets you know. That part I'm OK with, I just wish it weren't so damn boring.

Running out of food is pretty much impossible. You'd have to consistently pick the locations with the least food, always give in to bandits, and recruit every dink you meet on the road. Without any details I can't tell what you're doing wrong, but I would start choosing loot locations better, fighting bandits when it makes more sense, and only recruiting the characters you know you really need so you don't have a bunch of idiots going through all your food; -2 food per event is very little, but -8 will bankrupt you very quickly.

oh boy then don't even attempt marathon mode
it took me 3 whole days to finish that piece of assgoop
All the runs took way longer than anything should and my whole team swapped a lot of times.
If you want to play the game super fast and easily, here:

But if you're gonna plan on doing the harder modes, there are 2 things to keep in mind of:

1) Trait Combo's : At the start of the game, you can choose 2 characters with 2 traitsthat compliments each other. You want an easy skill check run? use a Paranoid + Civilized and you cannot lose food and will usually win every skill check. You want an OP character that is good at combat? Use Big Bruiser + Berzerker. Things like that goes a long way my man.

2) Spend Your Food: At the start of my playthrough, i was super frugal. But time after time, it became a necessity to balance food and buying things to spend. I usually have 3 until the last 2 siege and whenever i spend money on things, i keep around 2 - 3 rations left so i don't starve on the way.

I just completed Deadier road to Canada mode.

1: Dogs do not underestime them, I completed the last seige with a dog solo and a Hunting rifle with 15 rounds. Their speed is great.

2: Do not over recuit, Over recuiting leads to more upkeep (food costs). This can cause dispair events (including seiges) and lack of training.

3: Once you get a good foundation of what to pick during events you can dodge alot of hassles.

4: If you are not doing a Rambo run, Have at least one character (generally the starting one) with High fitness and Str, this gives you a bruiser to deal with meleeing the Zombies.

Suggested Ultra-fit/Fighter/Athelete/Martial Artist and Warrior/Beserk/Practical/Mysterious Wanderer. Fighter/Martial Artist (if you don't want to deal with the randomness of finding a melee weapon) and Warrior or Beserk are the easiest.

5: Gas and Food are the two most crucial resources imo, Especially if you are not running Paranoid. Lack of either leads to more Bandit encounters/Injuries. However on the last day they are pretty much useless. Make sure to spend them (with weapons like the chainsaw or buying stuff.

6: Keep moving you don't have to kill every zombie (or even close) and learn how to use explosives

7: A character with maximum Medical skill has a chance to treat wounds through 'improvisation' if there are no medical supplies left.

Here's a tip for seiges. you don't have to kill. you just have to survive through the entire siege and escape. before a seige starts it tells you how long they will last.

After a few failed runs, I created 2 characters to put in the game. One took car nut + paranoid, the other Health Care + Nurturing. With those 2, I have made it to the Canadian border twice. Not actually crossed the border and won, but made it to the border...

Paranoid is one of the best traits in the game imho. I noticed that I wasn't even really getting hit by the zombies, it was always the random bandit encounters. With paranoid, the bandits aren't even an issue so it basically eliminates all the random health and supply loss while traveling.
