Getting total system crash, 5950x,4070, 32gb ram with plenty to spare requiring power supply shut down to re-boot - happened after update, all other games function fine.

Unity engine is well known for gpu overload when heavy rendering, particularly with complex shaders, particle effects, or large scenes... Not to mention memory leaks. Rust is the biggest game made on unity and there is absolutely nothing FP can do about it.

It seems to be an issue related to virtual memory (virtual memory = physical memory + swap file).

I have 32 GB of physical RAM + had set the Windows swap file to a fixed size of 8 GB for a total of 40 GB virtual memory. With those settings my system ran perfectly well for years, no issues in any games.

Then when I recently started to play a bit of Rust again, it would constantly crash. Often times before I would even load into the server, sometimes shortly after I spawned in the world.

Fired up HWiNFO64 while running Rust to see if I can spot anything out of the ordinary.
And lo and behold, it showed me that virtual memory usage spiked to 99.8%, with only 5 MB left, which is basically nothing. Once your system has only this little virtual memory available, all kinds of weird stuff can happen. Not only game crashes but even the OS can potentially lock up completely.

So I changed my Windows swap file setting from 8 GB fixed to have it dynamically managed by Windows.
Didn't have any Rust crashes ever since.

Crazy thing is that now that Windows scales the swap file up as needed, HWiNFO reported a virtual memory usage of up to 45 GB, which is absolutely insane.

TL;DR:
If you're just looking for a potential solution:
Make sure you have PLENTY of virtual memory available. Depending on your in-game settings, your system might require 40 GB or even more while running Rust.

I figured it out myself, how to run the game, after an unsuccessful update, you need to increase the value of virtual ram in windows.I increased the value to 20 000 - 30 000.No one helped me (which is sad) neither facepunch or steam..f...

Server loading time too long, so long... So long that I ended up running a side game to wait for, and I ended up losing my desire to play rust.

10 years later, the game has become impossible to play, not to mention the repeated crashes. And this on the three machines of the house. Tonight we made room for these three machines to celebrate the 10th anniversary of rust, we definitely uninstalled it.
