Only Modern GPU. My Radeon 7870 has been running the new Rust for years now without 1 problem whatsoever.
Everyone with an R9 380-390 seems to have a problem indeed.
AsRock z77 extreme 4

Did you try capping framerates for rust? I capped em to 70.
Overheating? Use HWMonitor (Nice tool for checking out temps)
EDIT: A couple days ago I upgraded to driver version 16.3.2, maybe you didn't?
I don't know how to cap the framte rate and I am on 16.3.2.
Press F1 in game then type fps.limit 65 or what ever you want to cap the fps and this will take some of the load off the GPU and keep temps down a bit. Maybe this helps.
Freeze then monitor dies and i have to restart computer. Happened 6 times in a row.
Have 6.4 lastest driver. Tried turning off raptr.
Please do. I have a post up on reddit also.
It's definitely not an overheating problem. I'd recommend you not to set the fan speed higher than 70%.
