He forgets to clarify that the power must come from the output, not from the branches, for the data logic to work. Therefore, you need 3 instead of 2 branches in order to have the main output free for your other circuits. You do lose 1 power in the process (2nd branch) but this branch can go for conveyors or something else with passthrough.
