How to fix settings not saving in Rust
Been looking around and its a very common issue, you run the game, change settings then play. When you've finished you quit and go do whatever, next time you launch the game all your settings are back to defaults.

Just found this fix on the official Rust forums however its not pinned or marked at all so I figured I'd post it here and hope one of the devs would pin it.

1) Open the games install directory

/steam/steamapps/rust

2) Create a new to!der called CFG

3) Open CFG and inside create a file called Client.cfg, leave it empty.

4) Run the game, set up your options and click apply.

5) Join a server then quit

6) Close the game

The game should have populated the client.cfg file with your settings.

Enjoy

It does work, make sure you have enabled file extension view and the file is called client.cfg

Have you gone into settings and reset your keys? If it has worked all your settings will reset and your keys will be blank.

Make a .cfg file

I opened notepad and created an empty file called "client" and changed the extension to CFG, but whenever I join the game, I can't move or use any keys, also, when I exit, the file is still empty. What gives? Is there something I do wrong?

You need to rebind your keys.

Looks like once you make a CFG folder the game creates the CFG file by itself

:GUYS READ THIS FOR HELP WIT THE POST:

Create the CFG Folder and open it Inside the CFG Folder create a Text file Called Client.cfg (You are going to need Notepad ++ for the next part) Next you right click Client.cfg Text document that you created and open it with Notepad ++. After that you go to File>Save As and Under neath File name Change the file save type as Any or ALL (Should be all the way at the top) and then hit save. you should have a new blank CFG file. just delete the old .txt

does this wokr for the new version of rust?

I found something that worked for me. I created a file called "Client" with the file extention ".cfg". you must not put it in a file. just go right into rust's game files and make it there with everything else. This worked for me.
EDIT: Make the starting file a text document. not sure if this matters but it's what I did.
