Solving Mini Freezes (Not Lag)
Hey guys, running Rust on a killer MSI gaming laptop (i7 processor, Nvidia GTX 770m dedicated graphics card, 12GB Ram, 3.4Ghz etc) Which has been able to run nearly any game at max settings with no problems - So I was suprised that I was lagging in Rust

I was able to solve quite a bit of my lag via a few fixes:
1) The ' no.grass false ' command in console
2) A fix I found on the Facepunch forums where I found the game was using my processor instead of my graphics card to run it (Fixed via the Nvidia Control Panel)
For those who want to try the second fix, here's a link to the original Facepunch forum thread about it with directions: http://www.deliveringevidence.inhealth.org/showthread.php?t=1332976

However I'm still getting small mini freezes. By this I don't mean lag, (Lag meaning I'm holding W, freeze for a second, then suddenly I'm 100 feet ahead of my last position) but actual mini freezes where I'll be running, everything will freeze for about 1-3 seconds, then it will resume as normal. These mini freezes occur for me about every 10-45 seconds, sometimes more spread out.

Because of this, zombies (particularly red zombies) are absurdly dangerous to me, even when I have great equipement on me I often die because I can't get enough shots into them before I suddenly mini freeze and they get about 3 hits on me while I'm frozen. :czombie:

Also, these mini freezes have nothing to do with the recent DDoS attacks on Rust servers, I was expereincing them before any of that began and even when literally everything else in the game is running perfectly I still encounter these mini freezes.

The game for me is by all means playable, and I'm grateful that my performance works this well already even in early Alpha, but what I'm wondering/asking is if anyone has found a way to solve these mini freezes, without them I'll be able to run this game flawlessly and actually help my team on zombie raids. These mini freezes are literally all that stand between me and a perfectly performing game.

Thanks for reading! If you have any advice/fixes go ahead and post them in the comments - however please note I'm not complaining about the performance of Rust here or saying I have lag, mini freezes are different. I'm perfectly aware the game is early Alpha and I'm honestly happy with how well it works at this stage, I'm simply asking if anyone happens to know of solutions to fix the mini freezes :D:

I get the same thing, I really think it comes down to optimization, or the lack there-of. It seems like when it's loading in new buildings or players or updating the textures/sprites as you get closer it causes a minor hiccup, and lots of things doing this update makes the hiccup longer and longer, until you've got a 3 second lock-up every time you move more than few feet.

Mind posting a link to the CPU vs GPU fix?

both wrong, its not your computers, it's the service. the service is currently being ddos'd by a third party, causing this absurd rubberband lag and mini freezes.

No, it's not the DDoS. These freezes are an issue even when everything else is running perfectly. And the more a server gets built up the worse it becomes.

It is not a latency or connection issue.

@Azach I think what you're saying must be it, poor optimization would explain it and I certainly identify with the updating textures problems, I get the hiccups often but much much more often around buildings, animals, and zombies. And yeah! I should have posted the fix in the original thread, I'll edit it an put it in there as well, but heres the direct link - http://www.deliveringevidence.inhealth.org/showthread.php?t=1332976 I'm pretty sure this fix won't work for everyone but it sure did for me

@Quilldragon Nope, these mini freezes have nothing to do with the DDoS incident (Which I've been following closely and am very aware of) the problems were occuring before any of the DDoS started and as Azach was saying the mini freezes/hiccups happen even when everything else is running flawlessly

It`s not DDOS! This freezes are happening since the release of rust to the public to buy it! I think that the problem is server side because it`s happen a lot more in 200 players server!

I find the highly annoying since it happens to me to. I hope this gets fixed.
You could try defragging your hard drive, It sounds like it's taking a while to read data from the drive, causing stuttering. Just my two cents.

I'm on a SSD, so I kinda doubt defraging would help much. The recent server wipes have helped to minimize the mini-freezes, but I'm holding off on playing a bit. Pretty disheartening to work your ass off to build a cool structure, then go down to the bottom of the hill to find the dupers have built a 50x50 metal wall and keep.

Yeah, fighting zombies with this problem is very difficult, since they do so much damage, it does not help when your game freezes, then it stops and you are dead :/

I get freezes more frequently when ♥♥♥♥ hits the fan, like a zombie attack or ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bears

Same, they strike most often when in a gunfight or when taking out zombies making this problem extremely annoying (I'm almost useless to my pvp team sometimes because of these mini freezes)

THANKS! I have the same computer and the same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ problem, im going CRAZY over here!!^^ but im glad im not the only one with this problem! :)

99% badly optimized and server lag not client side.

@Nicke I know exactly how you feel, haha, I wandered all over the place looking for people with the same issue with no luck for quite a while. On a sidenote, I'm hoping the new vsync options they added a few days ago might help out mini freezes (I have no way of checking at the moment as I'm on terrible wifi for the weekend)

@Sabrehawk I'm pretty sure it is just poor optimisation, I have a guy on my friends list who has been meticulously testing everything on Rust on his various rigs with no change in results - so the only conclusion I can come to is poor optimization

@Mufter Please don't advertise your servers on bugs and fixes discussions, it helps no one
