LAN Server Hosting?

May be a stupid question, but can I host a server on my LAN for my friends to connect to instead of paying for a needless dedicated server? Is that a thing yet? Or what?

P.S: I'm tired of hearing all these "STRANGERS MAKE THE GAME, Y U PLAY SAFE NOOB!?" type comments. I'm the kind of guy that rather would play alone or with/against friends, even in Rust. Now that that's out of the way, continue.

The server probably will be shown for all when hosted, also guide is probably somewhat outdated, read up the topic if you're still up to hosting the server.

Damn, I don't know how to use SteamCMD, the guide is really not helping, do I download the Rust app even thought I already have it installed on the computer? It says cannot run app, subscription needed, I'm so lost.

I haven't used the files, but I believe the idea is to download it without trying to log in. Or the sub part will pop up.

Okay.... I'm obviously missing something here, I can't seem to install using the force_install_dir (Path) because everytime I navagate to the Rust folder, the command line is sent but nothing happens?

Do not use steam folder. Set up new folder outside of steam. steamcmd will download whole hierarchy to relative path you set.

The path is relative to the folder where you placed steamcmd.exe

Here's an example of how the target line for the exe's look:

New Rust:

C:\SteamCMD\servers\rust\RustDedicated.exe -batchmode +server.hostname "hostname" +server.port 28015 +server.identity "mydata" +server.seed randomnumber +rcon.port 28016 +rcon.password "passwd" -load

Legacy:

C:\SteamCMD\servers\rust_legacy\Legacy\rust_server.exe -batchmode -port 28035 -datadir "legacydata/" -maxplayers 50

Okay, well I have the SteamCMD folder set up, it just says whenever I try to "update" or "install" the app, it says No Subscription.
