Imagine if you had practiced an instrument for 1000 hours. Or exercised for 1000 hours. Or went to college for 1000 hours.
Instead, you are left with vague memories of smashing rocks and trees in a pretend world of a video game.
Now, with that said, I waste a hell of a lot of time playing video games too. It has ultimately amounted to nothing. No skills gained from it, no money, no societal achievements, nothing.
Games are a complete waste of time. Yet, we still play them. The memories we gain from gaming aren't even that great, they all run together, with very very few shining moments where we actually had a higher than average amount of fun.
:P
"as long as you enjoyed it"
That's not how life works. We have to do things that we don't enjoy to advance ourselves mentally and physically. Just like we grind our RPG characters to advance, we have to grind our "real life characters", e.g. ourselves, to advance, otherwise you remain a "noob" at real life.
Just enjoying something does not make it right. Bullies enjoy bullying, should we tell them to keep doing it "as long as they enjoy it"? Heroine addicts enjoy heroine, should we say keep doing it "as long as they enjoy it"?
Practicing a skill is usually not fun, working is usually not fun, but we do it to reach our goals of self improvement, and once we've improved ourselves, then we can have even more fun than we could have before we trained.
There is a lot of "end-game content" in real life. But you have to grind to get there. The millionairs who are physically fit, healthy, and have beautiful intelligent wives and large homes, and multiple awesome computers, and private jets to travel around the world and do anything and everything that they want in real life... they had to grind to get there.
Most people remain noobs at real life and never reach the "end game content". They wind up staying in the same "zones" that they started life in, its sad.. really.
Side Note: Imagine yourself as a character in a RPG. Write your stats and skills down on a piece of paper. Seriously, it sounds silly, but try it.. write down the real life skills that you have, and what "level" each of those skills are compared to a master at that skill, and try to be truthful about it, only you are going to see it anyway. Seriously, everything from cooking to martial arts, write those skills down on a piece of paper with a skill level that is true to yours. Now, if you want to actually increase your "real life character's" skills, you have to grind a bit. You have to train. And its usually not as fun as simply loading up a video game and playing pretend-time in a virtual world.
If you don't train, though, your "real life character" will remain a low level noob for the rest of your life. You'll wind up being 40 years old with the skillset of a 15 year old who does train himself.
Games are entertainment. Some people play to much, yes, but that can be said of everything in life. Also a rich business man has no more grasp on happiness in this life than a poor farmer. Life is complicated. There is no way to "grind" to being happy.
You do have some solid points but it's sounds like you are unhappy with your time spent on games. And stop comparing everything in RL to games.
Maybe you play to much? Ha!
Let me add - Rust is such a great game. It's not a game about acheivements and level ups. It's the experience. Because you always know everything you gain is really just temporary. Raids and wipes are headed you way eventually.
Peace out. Rock on
The reason I used the RPG character comparison is that gamers can relate to it. Some gamers need to realize that they're grinding a video game character's skills and assets more than they're grinding real life skills and assets. Their real life character winds up having zero skills while their video game characters become wealthy and masterful.
We get so sucked into video games - obtaining loot, money, and experience in these games - that we forget that we could be gaining loot, money, and experience on our "real life character" instead.
And you say that people who obtain wealth in real life aren't really working towards happiness, then why should we try to obtain wealth on our virtual characters? Well, obtaining skills and wealth in video games allows you to get to the really interesting parts of those games. Real life isn't any different.
And yes, I do play games too much, so I'm speaking from personal experience.
I like you Chris, I really do but you can't really categorise everyone in you "Real Life is Better" mentality I personally believe real IS better but still, What if the dude who played 1000+ hours of Rust or any video game is really being attacked/rejected in real life. What if they are sad/lonely, or crying/scared? What if they hate their life? And can't fix it? WELL then you GRAB a RPG!!!!!!!! You can be at the top of the food chain if you will in a matter of days, not weeks and years. You can "feel" good about you're self for once...feel happy....It may not be real but man that "sugar RUSH" you get from killing the ass nextdoor who has attacked you at school and calls you name, He will kick your ass in real life the next day but man.....Dat sugar RUSH..........Look real life is life..... games are a part of life too if you want them to be. Don't hate on the people who make them part of their life, it's not your life, it's theirs and they can do what they will with it, GOD gave us freedom of choice....To do what you want, when you want. Now I can relate to you because I have 1400+ hours in Rust alone, not counting my other 120+ games......................Also you rock face punch for also giving the people, your people the freedom of choice in your video game. I speak from the heart and i'm typing like a mad man muttering to myself....I don't care.........I am a Man and a man can do what a man wants to do!
