Cheaters dont just go around hacking people so they can cheat with that account, doesnt work that way. I dont know about the underground rust market so there could be a hacker group that hacks accounts to sell to cheaters?
To be honest, sounds like FP just want cheaters to pay more to access the game after a ban, I'll wait on full details to reserve judgement
So it's not as much of an investment as you think it is.
But there is an interesting aspect, this means cheaters will have to move skins around in order to play, with 7 day trade ban on newly purchased items it is inevitable that a lot of skins will be lost. It will affect the skin price if this premium server thing catches on.
I do not think this will make FP a much more money, maybe a bit but I doubt it will be much, people will likely buy a lot of skins off of skin trading websites which will increase the number of scams. A cheater being scammed puts a smile on a my face tho
I am however interested if FP allows server owners to adjust the value on the premium server, let's say to 500$? Because cheaters may be inclined to gamble 20$ worth of skins away to ruin someone's day, but 500$? That I doubt. I do not think every server should do that, but it would be interesting to find that line cheaters are not as willing to cross.
I like the idea overall, won't remove cheaters but it will make it less likely to meet them.
Who in their right mind is defending FP gate-keeping Official servers from paying customers, behind an additional "paywall", because they are too lazy to just fix the cheating problem, and too greedy to stop selling the game to repeat offenders.
- You can't use the argument that all the cheaters are using stolen accounts either, because there is no way that their "new customer" sales numbers are that high, without half the sales being from repeat cheaters. There simply is no other explanation for the numbers of their sales increasing vs the total numbers of their player-base remaining steady. People are not buying the game, and then NOT playing it.
2) you cannot stop cheaters from buying the game again, that is not possible with any measures because it's trivial to make your PC look like any other PC and make your network look like any other network. So if you can't stop them, monetize them. That's not greed, that's common sense. It takes literal seconds to spoof your hardware.
The only way you can do it is to require face ID to buy and play the game. Which I do not think is a bad idea for premium option, servers where people can only play if they have verified their identity. (note that face ID is not the same as just a picture)
3) Rust has a steady growth in playerbase, it's continuously one of the most popular games on streaming platforms which drives sales like crazy. Events that have twitch drops are also designed to promote the game and they result in a spike in sales.
I get the doom and gloom talk, there are cheaters, but you seem to be saying that game has way more cheaters than it actually does.
Also, they are not preventing you from playing official servers, only a select few if you ain't got something. Which should be fine, there's like 20k active servers
