Annika Feb 24, 2014 @ 10:36am
As an european player, how am I able to play with an american friend?
I got Rust for me and my boyfriend, only to realise that we're unable to play together cause Im in europe and hes in the US. Is there any servers or tips how we would be able to play together? Othervice I just wasted money on a game I cant play with a friend.

Annika, the direct answer to your question(that the first commenter failed to answer) is that you two are unable to play on the same Official Server due to your locations(this can be bypassed by one of you joining the other manually through the IP address,) but you can play on a Community Server(a server paid for and ran by another Player) or on a Modded Server(same as community with different rules.) much more easily.

When you open Rust, you'll see the different tabs up on top as Official, Community, Modded, Friends, Whitelist, and History. Simply click on Community and select a server to play on. From there he can join you through the Friends tab, and you will be on the same Server. Once you have both logged in at least once, you can always access that same server again by logging into through your History tab instead.

Several of us have our own servers, and like the guy above, want more players. But many of us are still polite enough to answer your question with an actual answer without shamelessly plugging our servers.

Hope this helps!

wow instead of being helpfull you decide to post some server advertising instead, what a ♥♥♥♥ move!

well non of my American friends own this game but as far as i know is that you can see the server your steam friends are playing on in the server lists, you or him could try joining a server and see if that list has added it then jump on like that.
the other way would be to add the adress of server manually in the console, but like i said none of my American friends play this, so i am just guessing.

Hey sorry about that, thought you were looking for a Community server to play in together!
Didn't mean to advertise.. just trying to help out!

Thank you for the great and informative post!

So instead of joining the official servers, we should try one of the user made ones? (aka: community made servers)
How can we find servers that allow the both of us to go in? Is there a search function to browse trough the 61 pages, or do we have to just go trough them one by one manually? So far, the only servers I am able so see are either german or russian, and the servers he sees are US ones. I believe I have to be in a certain area to be able to enter a server?
The only other choice I had in mind would be making our own server, but it wouldnt be too much fun to play with just the two of us.

Thanks again!

There is no location restriction on community made servers(unless they kick one of you from having to high ping, but usually that's not the case) Just join one with 20-30 people, that's enough to make sure you don't get killed every minute and at the same time have some player interaction, otherwise you can just join an empty one if you only want to play with your friend.

When one of you find a server(possibly one located in a country between you two, so you don't get too much delay when playing)join it and remember the name, then the other just click on the "Friends" tab in the server menu and if it doesn't pop up, hit the refresh button located in the bottom right corner. (You need to have eachother on Steam friends in order for this to work.)

That should be it.

Probably the easiest way for you to both get on the same server:

One of you pick a server and get on it. The other one's server list has a tab for servers your friends are on. I've used that to find servers my friends in Europe are on.

Edit: I hit post, and blood sugar said the same thing while I was typing.

Sadly Annika you would have to go through and select one of the servers manually. Essentially you'll want to decide what you want from the game. There are many many modifications a server Admin can do to their version of the game. These are usually listed in the name of the Server.

Examples, "No sleepers" "PvP" "Instacraft" etc etc. These are all functions they have enabled in their server. Some servers are strict, others not, some have massive resources, others have rare or normal amounts. You must find one suited to what you want to play on.

If you'd like to chat privately I can explain several of the options for you.

Im confused, if hes your bf, how do you not know where he is, or where hes from? lol. Sounds like a stranger, more like.

Anyway, you can use this site:

http://toprustservers.com/

You both can look up for tags that you like, like sleepers, no sleepers, pvp, pve, instacraft, all that stuff (if you don't know what they are, you'll eventually learn) and click on that server.

While browsing it, you'll get the adress for that same place. Now hit F1 while in rust main menu to open console, write it there, or paste if you copied before, and there you go, you will both join the exact same server. Then just meet up and play together.

Thats it.

If you read her original post more closely, you'll see that she knows exactly where he is and that he's not a stranger but in a different Country currently. They were playing on Official Servers, of which only the ones available in your Region are displayed. So her being in Europe, could not see the US Official server that he was on.

Good suggestion with the toprustservers.com though, :)

You're welcome, and your English was perfectly fine. You communicated your question clearly and seemed to understand the responses well enough. Hope you and your boyfriend enjoy the game. Just be sure to stay close because people will chase you down to shoot you.

Just speak on the microphone with your female voice.

Instantly there will be males throwing goods at you. 12 year old, but still males.
