go to library, right click on the game Rust, go to properties, click update, select "always keep this game updated" then restart steam and it should automatically update.

If the server you're trying to join is a Developmental server you may have to wait for the update to actually be available for download. If this doesn't work wait an hour or so there is suppose to be a big update any minute now. and they just be testing it out for stability on that official you're trying to join.

with rust i find it often takes about 10-180 minutes to realise there is an update, and for steam to update it

You could try reinstalling the game, especially if you have fast bandwith. I had this problem once and did a lot of fiddling around, trying various ways to get it to work. Nothing I tried did the trick, and I was ready to give up. I don't play Rust, but my dad does. After trying every trick in the book for 2 hours he had enough of it and beat the ♥♥♥♥ out of me with a set of jumper cables. Then about 13 minutes later the game started updating and after that everything went fine. Moral of the story here is: just be patient. This happens a lot, especially on official servers like Facepunch London.
