Live off the grid, don't build a home in a populated area. Don't chat too much, it's best for you to be quiet. DO NOT build a big home, big homes are expensive and are targets for raiders. Build a small home in a low pop area. Understand the route to the nearest radtown so you may be able to transport some of your goodies home (best to do this when the server is winding down.) And finally, If troublemakers are passing by, don't engage them unless you're very confident that you can defeat them. If you're not confident enough (most of the time) just hide from them.

That's all the tips I've got. Most of my playtime was solo.

step 2) FALLOUT 4 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
step 3) make conversation about fallout
step 4) ask about rust
step 5) profit?

You can play with me, i'm a solo player, all my friends hate vanilla. I've been looking for a friend to play with. :)

I've been on community servers lately, and been quite lucky with the guys there. Been given many items and even got an old base today. I even built an nice home for myself up in the mountains, where i then go on trips from time to time. Remember to make a map, as it is crucial for navigation into the solo play and house arrangement. Rust is an awesome game.

I agree with McKibbles, I started playing solo, Quiet, Learning the ropes and before long got chatting to people and now have toms of friends on many servers that accept i prefer to go solo but will help me if i get into trouble with clans or raiders in exchange for blueprints they need that i have or occasional assistance with their battles - jump in and enjoy

Playing solo on Rust is easy, independant of server population.

There are 3 keys to doing it successfully though:

#1: "Build small, build hidden, build out of the way".

Start out with a small base, 2x2 or 3x3 preferably.

Hide it well, there are many cavities in the slopes by the beaches, mostly fresh-spawns prefer to travel on the beaches anyway, among the rocks on mountainsides works as well!

By "Out of the way" i simply mean away from any monuments and/or roads, most people build near one or inbetween a few monuments (depending on if you're playing procedural or hapis etc) and think they're being clever in doing so, being able to safely fetch items from the areas and bring them home quickly! what they don't count on is that most bases are easily raided, people always miss SOMETHING vital in building their homes secure.

#2: "Play according to your gear"

i cannot stress this enough, DON'T run around monuments and "main-roads" hoping to survive only wearing burlap and your trusty spear, because trust me, if you're not a veteran when it comes to Rust, you most likely won't.

I'm not saying it IS IMPOSSIBLE, i'm simply stating that it is very unlikely unless you have the proper experience. I myself have taken down several properly geared fellers only using spears and huntingbows, once 3 at the very same time. A friend of mine took out 5 lads with Thompsons only using the starter-rock, it was quite a feat i tell you!

Simply stay in the shadows, travel by beaches/mountainsides, stay low up to the point where you've managed to find or craft some decent armour/weaponry if you're not confident and comfortable taking out people with Assault Rifles using primitive means.

#3: "Blueprints"

Make sure to get the best use out of the precious Blueprint Fragments you manage to scavenge, look up what you get from each stage (Fragments < Page < Book < Library) and try to collect as much as you possibly can, "Knowledge is Power" , this is one of the most true statements within Rust. If you have blueprints on everything you need, assault rifles, bolt actions, metal armour, explosives/charges, quarries/pumpjacks etc.. You're set.. By then it doesnt matter if someone raids you, you can still CRAFT everything you had! It almost makes being raided a relief as you get something to fight for again.

This was everything for how to succeed in playing Rust solo, i hope you'll find use in my little "guide".

To effectively raid/defend yourself in this game you need a minimum of 2 people. Make a quick ingame friend if necessary. Solo is something you can do but in the amount of time it takes you to craft/build/gather alone, you'll be killed or raided before you can do anything fun.

Followed your advices by instinct.
Result: I have 4 small 2x2/2x3 stone houses spread around the map with a fair amount of goods in them on a populated server but:
1) I'm locked outside after having been killed (but that's my mistake for not putting a sleeping bag inside, outside ones got all destroyed).
2) I can't make it easily back to them after respawn without getting killed 100s times.
3) Trees, Rocks and Animals are almost totally missing in remote areas so forget about low grade fuel and furnaces.
4) I could live out of mushrooms and get cloth from the ferns and play at very low pace but there are close to none everywhere and especially in remote areas.
So far I enjoy the game (although not for long down the line before uninstall) just for seeing how many minutes I can stay alive after respawn.

to put things simple, point 1&2 are completely up to your own mistake of not having sleeping-bags / beds in your bases.

point 3&4: Trees/animals/rocks seems to spawn in a "at one given time" on servers, meaning if you clear an entire area of wood/rocks/animals they will respawn somewhere else and whatever gets harvested on another location than yours have a chance of spawning at your location. This is a problem you'll encounter ANYWHERE on the map, countless times have i harvested my local area clean only to venture further and further out for each farming-trip, after some time stuff starts spawning back home again.

As for enjoyment/uninstalling, Rust is simply not everyones game, some have that basic instinct needed to survive in it, some pick it up after a while and some never seem to grasp it at all..
Scorpyo Nov 11, 2015 @ 1:13pm
It's not that I don't grasp the game, It's that I find it somewhat unbalanced in disfavour of the solo player once you start over with just a rock and torch. But at some point you're right, it's a matter of personal nature. In the end , for me, in the long run it's gonna be the same boredom either dying 100s times or raiding succesfully 100s times.
