Rust
What Happens When You're Offline?
Hey guys.

Quick question: what happens when you've logged off and you're living your actual life? (which I have)
I really like the look of Rust and I'd like to buy it, but I'd need to know beforehand what's going to happen.

Can other players loot and kill my sleeping body?
Is that awesome fortress I spent ages building going to be torn to shreds in no time just because I decided I should get some sleep in the real world?

Thanks :)

Yes to all.

Seriously?
What's the point in playing then, unless you're some World of Warcraft no-life?
(that is an actual question, by the way)

Thanks for your reply, Saitech :)

It's a fair point, some people don't like the whole offline raiding thing, others don't mind. The simple way to combat this is by joining a clan so you have people watching your back that can be online when you're not.

You can also try and play smart, keep your base small and hidden. If anyone finds it, they will probably think it's not worth their time trying to raid it. Someone probably will raid it in the end, but you could last a bit longer this way.

You just need to be aware that if you play Rust on a PVP server then you are going to die and lose your bases and your loot many times over. Then every 2-4 weeks the server wipes and you all start again, lol.

Again, thanks for your detailed reply. I really appreciate it.

So are there any non-PVP servers?

Yeah sure, there are a bunch of community PVE servers that you can play on that don't allow raiding or killing of fellow players. The PVE system isn't perfect but it's a work in progress, it also helps to have active admins too.

There are also lots of modded servers that do various different things, there are plenty to choose from.

You will hear a lot about admin abuse and stuff, but it's just a case of finding the right server for you. Not all of us admins are a*holes :D

Legacy Rust had servers which despawned sleeping bodies after a certain amount of time, meaning you only had to stay safe for 15 minutes or something... is this still possible?

That sounds really good! I guess I will be buying Rust at some point in the very near future then :)
Thanks for all your help, Saitech.

Let's hope other survival and crafting game devs allow for this server variety too. I'm really starting to love this genre.

As far as I know some modded servers have "sleepers" turned off but without checking im not 100% sure.

i think sleepers off is available in the current build. Its server side and a lot of admins dont know its there.

That sounds like a really good system, Rigatoni. I hope you're sitll right. That would certainly allay my fears of an enormous base and inventory rape of epic proportions when I'm away in the real world.
