Can't play Rust on Linux :(
Hi, recently I switched to Linux and most all games work (like on Steam deck). Rust also works, but I cannot join any server because of the anticheat engine.
With Linux gaining momentum because of the Steam Deck, I'm a bit surprised that this is not yet supported on such a large title :(
Will this be fixed soon?

Kind regards,

Bump because I'm genuinely interested in a response to this.

It's not "broken". This game has been out for 10 years. No plans on ever changing it. Get Windows.

there ain't no shame in getting a small SSD for Windows and running the games from it.

You can buy keys for 2$ on resell websites and have an isolated system for gaming by making a dual boot machine.

Windows is forcing people to update and there's a massive exodus right now. If you like giving your personal information and the like to a cupcake toucher, that's on you.
I'd be more concerned with what that says about you.

I think more and more people are moving towards Linux, now that Steam can run almost any game on Linux as well. Also the Steam Deck helps (imagine playing Rust on a Steam deck :).
Either way, I am not going to install Windows, just for Rust. I'll wait until Linux/Steam gains more momentum. If enough people change to Linux, the devs will have incentive to release an anticheat for Linux as well :) Valve has a really nice one where you can either kick cheaters or change them in a frog (I believe).

If you are interested in exploring Linux: Try Linux Mint. It is (imho) easier to install than Windows 11 and no mandatory sending of logs to Microsoft...

Disclaimer: Not saying Mint is 'the best'. There are many distro's that are nice like Garuda, Fedora, OpenSuse, Manjaro, etc. Just Saying Mint is a really easy way into the Linux world ;)

Ok, maybe this will help: I have Rust working. There are a few servers that support Linux clients (just search through modded servers for 'Linux' and you find them).
At first the world wouldn't load and crash Rust. After some reading and tinkering this helped fix it:

- Make sure you have a Swap partition of at least 16GB (mine is at 32GB, but I do not think you really need that much)
- Make sure your gfx settings are a bit lower than under Windows if the swap file doesn't help.
- There is an experimental feature for efficient loading of the map. I'm not sure it really helps, but maybe it helps someone.

If you're looking to play Rust on Linux, come join [EU] Rustux - Linux Friendly (client.connect play.rustux.eu:28015). It's a Monthly Vanilla server with no Mods or pay-to-win.
guys I think this need to be reflected for each game but i think rust can be enable eac for linux support
for devs this can be the solution https://forum.enlisted.net/en/t/please-enable-eac-support-on-linux-with-guide/135179
I heard you can access the Steam Server List and find unofficial Rust servers that have EAC disabled that Linux users can join. However, I'd love it if Facepunch got EAC to work for Rust / Proton.

Rust works flawlessly on Linux with good performance. Gaming on Linux is thriving thanks to Proton. I would love if they enabled EAC for Linux.

This would let Steam Deck users join too. I know Facepunch are inspired and have good relationship with Valve. Rust got a lot of inspiration from half life. Valve let Facepunch use the source engine for s&box.

Some might argue EAC was disabled on Linux to reduce cheaters who use Linux as a platform for hacks, but Rust is a very popular game, and I am sure enabling it for Linux would scratch some of the backs at Valve for reinforcing Steam Deck position on the market.

i have been trying to get my GTX hosted server working for Linux/Steamdeck for a bit now ... its not as easy as unchecking the EAC box lol if anyone has any ideas .. please feel free to share them lol

It's not up to the server owners. It has to be done by Facepunch for the Rust client whether EAC bundled with Rust client would allow proton / Linux users.

Speaking of which, I wonder if Facepunch could have implemented an option in the steam client to choose EAC version that allows Linux. And then server owners could select if they would allow Linux enabled EAC.

The irony for me is that most of the servers themselves run on linux.
