Rust only using less than 4GB RAM and lagging?
My friend has a computer with 8GB RAM and the game worked well before but about a month or two ago it started lagging like hell and apparently it's only using half of available RAM and I believe this is the cause of his lagging. How do I fix that and make the game use more RAM?

yeah i gotta similar problem. new to me pc build. intel quad core 3.5 ghz, ddr4 2x4 ram, R9 290 gpu. buddy gave me a deal on his old mobo and processor, but half the ram slots don't work, ive got 4 gb sticks in slots 5 and 7, 1 and 3 don't work, slots 2 4 6 and 8 are extra slots that aren't used until you put sticks in 1 3 5 7. so ive got 8 gb total ram running right now, it says 10 gb minimum for this game, game crashes in main menu, not sure why, my processor and graphics card are right above minimum spec, ram is below minimum spec, 2x8 gb sticks is a hundred dollars tho, gonna borrow my friends 2x8 sticks and see if that allows the game to run. just wanted to ask other rust players what their experience is of running rust on 8 gb ram. 10 gb is an odd requirement

first off, windows itself uses anywhere from 3-4GB of ram, so your "friend" only has 4GB left to use for gaming.... tell your "friend" to buy more ram.

Mate it's not my "friend", it actually is my friend. Not sure about you but at least I'm used to helping my friends if they have a problem. I already have 16GB myself so I'm not in trouble. But I want to play with my friend cause it's more fun that way.

And that's a problem that started a couple of months ago. Before that he had more like 6GB that Rust was using. Now it's capped at like 3.8GB and it's nowhere near enough to play properly. And if he had the money to buy more RAM I'm sure he'd have done that already.

So no need to be rude man.

i average 50 fps on half setting 1920*1080. i have i5370k not overclocked, 1060 6gb gpu, 3*4gb in total 12gb ram ddr3 1600 mhz. i have it on ssd. load into game in 30 seconds and about 2-3 minutes into server. he should try to reinstall first rust or maybe even clean reinstall windows if it maybe will help. but probably he should add at least 4gb ram as i did.

You probably should read into paged memory, if it's not set to a high enough number, Windows may limit the RAM usage.

Weirdly enough it was 16GB, even though he only has 8GB. Can that affect it negatively?

the paging file (virtual memory) is managed by windows and always set to double the amount of installed ram, so that is normal.

but as i said, the pc needs more ram... 8GB isnt enough.

well my windows didn't wanna boot anymore. reinstalled from a flash drive, got 16 gb 8x2 sticks from ebay, but theyre not working so far, plugged the 2x4 sticks back in to get windows going. Will sleep and try the 16 gb sticks again tomorrow, if they don't work im going to talk to the ebay seller.
