It's not EAC, it's the Unity Game Engine that is the problem. Facepunch has already addressed this in public statements.

Well the game runs absolutely perfect on linux, and EAC absolutely does not shop cheating. I think it's less a case of technical difficulty and more one of not wanting to do the work. Case in point, they haven't even bothered to make their server software work properly when it's run in a bash shell instead of CMD. It runs, it's stable, but any commands you type are ignored. laziness
no, its not lazy to neglect linux. it would be wasteful to address it. put the resources into something that matters to the majority of your players, and don't spend anything on the sovereign citizen linux characters

to answer why people here talk about EAC and ignoring what you wrote - kind of. Yes, for native Linux support Facepunch would have to do a decent amount of work to get stuff working on Linux (again, remember they had a native client a couple years ago).

Thing is, we don't need it - it'd be nice but meh - there is a compatibility layer called 'Proton' which allows most Windows games to run on Linux. This works for most games including Rust as long as you don't require EAC.

When a developer uses EAC in their game there is a checkbox somewhere - I don't know where I just know that Epic said it's just a checkbox - that needs to be checked to allow EAC to work with the Proton compatibility layer.

For some obscure reason beyond my understanding Facepunch refuses to check this box. There is literally nothing else they need to do. Just check one small box. They don't have to do any testing, maintenance or extra steps according to what Epic wrote when they released this feature.

I've read pretty much the exact same story with Destiny 2 - but hopefully we don't hear the "No, it will never happen, it's Windows or nothing" line from the Facepunch devs... I've made the switch, not going back, so I won't be buying the game until Linux support is enabled.

"Destiny 2 is not supported for play on the Steam Deck or on any system utilizing Steam Play's Proton unless Windows is installed and running. Players who attempt to launch Destiny 2 on the Steam Deck through SteamOS or Proton will be unable to enter the game and will be returned to their game library after a short time.

Players who attempt to bypass Destiny 2 incompatibility will be met with a game ban."

It's not about native support, Rust already runs through Proton perfectly fine and even has dedicated non-EAC servers for linux players. It's literally just the anticheat getting in the way here, and that's a single toggle.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
