30 minutes of metal detector/metal detecting
I was in the desert for all of this. Despite what FacePunch said, the loot I got from around roads, around the giant excavator pit, around the beach, and around train tracks(all the areas I metal detected around) all seemed to be the same pool.

I got about 7 metal hatchets, 2 metal picks, 1 salvaged ice pick, 2 jackhammers, about 250 cooked frags, about 40 cooked HQM, 2 roadsign gloves, 2 coffee can helmets, 2 revolvers, 6 cans of beans, 38 pistol ammo, 39 rifle ammo, about 20 scrap, and about 10 or 15 roadsigns.

It seems that there are what I will call "batches" of dig spots. What I mean by this is that when I would be wandering around looking & listening for the green bar to fill up, and then subsequently filled up the yellow bar and found a dig spot, there would then be anywhere from 1 to even 4 more dig spots in very close proximity. Sometimes even just a couple of steps away.

More interestingly, I found all 6 of the cans of beans in just one of these batches. This made me think that maybe each batch has a certain "theme" of loot it will give you(like, maybe that batch I found was a can of beans batch, and maybe there were tools batches and resources batches).

However, further metal detecting did not reinforce this. For example, one batch I did gave me metal frags, HQM, roadsigns, & pistol ammo; obviously, roadsigns and pistol ammo have nothing to do with frags & HQM.

At first I thought the metal detector was a flop when I saw YTers struggling to use it(and not showcasing that there are batches) and just getting metal frags mostly. Though after using it myself, it actually seems nice. It may even be a new meta for me(almost definitely not for competetive players/PvPers though). It is actually very easy to use and even kind of fun in it's own way. Yes, getting frags does suck(only about 20 frags per dig spot), and I got way metal hatchets than other tools for some reason(I wonder if you can get salvaged axe and/or chainsaw), and getting 6 cans of beans from one batch was a literal FacePunch, but everything else I got was worth 30 minutes in my opinion. For someone who doesn't PvP & therefore relies on loot tables/tech treeing to get guns, being able to get a revolver(can you get other T1 guns?) from it is great. It is definitely a rare drop, but doesn't seem nearly as rare as getting a gun of any kind from monuments/road running. I also don't have enough play time for buying a jackhammer from OutPost to be worth the scrap cost, so getting that as an also not too rare drop is great as well.

What have been your findings? What do you think of the metal detector?

No, not yet. Shadowfrax has got his video about the update out now with an included loot table, but it is absolutely wrong sadly.
