What OS are you on? If you're on Windows 10, I can help. You may need to enable the view of file extensions.
There are two ways to do this, you can first just right click the background of the folder you're in and change the view to details, which should bring up some columns that disclose the file type.
OR you can enable it permanently by clicking in the top left corner of your Windows Explorer where it says "View" then to the right an option should appear saying "Options" click that. The click the "View" tab that shows up in the Folder Options pop-up. There, you'll see a list of check boxes, that's where you can find a variety of options, I suggest going through them briefly. But the important one that you need to UNcheck is "Hide extensions for known file types". You should now be able to distinguish file types by just looking at their names instead of having to change your view per window.
Hope that helps.
