If you're playing solo I'd say go on a modded 3x or 5x server to get the basics down and have fun

Watch YT tutorials, play low pop modded/community servers.
Mostly just run to outpost as soon as you spawn and don't stop to farm, only grab stuff as you go (crates, tree stumps, hemp and loose stone) and keep making your way. Place down sleeping bags on the way so if you die u don't have to respawn back at the beach. Unlock paddle BP and farm safezone around outpost. This is the most reliable noob strat.

Just kill the other player before he kills you. Rust is terrible at beginning, especially at wipe day :p

1st: RUN like Hell.
2nd: Join a mid-low pop server, I wouldn't suggest modded servers because it takes the grind for scrap away as that is the 1st basic mechanic that is required to be mastered or rather you need to put up with while playing rust.
3rd: Please try to make some friends or find people on some 3rd party apps to let you in on a 3-man or 4-man squad. If you have real life friends - just leave them because they aren't of any use anyway in your life - let alone Rust.
4th: As I myself am a full-time Solo - Try HARD to put a starter 2*1 with an airlock down with stone with 2 monuments close to you and find a spot which is not out in the open and visible to naked eyes of the zergs and clans.
5th: Leave the beach and run towards outpost as fast as you can while placing sleeping bags or towels(if you already on the DLC Wagon) on the way as you only grab the freebies (hemp, loose stone and wood) lying around, craft or find paddles to farm fast and also inside safezones. Once you are 3-4 squares away from Outpost - start farming with your rock - aim to craft your tier-1 tools ASAP and keep your eyes and ears wide open.
5th: Watch Willjum and avoid the other PvP chad streamers for now. Watch Welyn too, as he knows all about all "THE CRACKS".
