I lost my rock
And now I can't harvest wood. What do you do at this point, just die and respawn and start over? No rock, and I can't make tools to harvest wood because I don't have enough wood. You know - you can't get wood because you don't have enough wood to make the tools to get wood.

Are there rocks lying around to be picked up? I have not yet seen any...

Well you can kill yourself and respawn with new rock (F1, and kill), find loot areas and hope to get tools from boxes or you can find resources from ground to get enough to craft new tool (Tree stumps or rocks with different color/shape)

I went to the water and drank salt/contaminated water and died LOL. Problem solved. So yeah, don't loose your rock until you can make some tools. Nice. Bit if realism there, really - in RL, if you loose your tools, you die.

I did find some tree stumps and loose rock, but I starved to death before I found enough to build anything.

There is a way around it if you lose your rock. Pick up wood and stones from the ground until you have enough for a tool but it's probably easier to kill yourself.

Hit Q, go to tools, pick the rock to craft (10 Stone). Bingo.
