Is there some secret to getting your first base?
I've seen veteran player videos where they go from naked to late-game base & weapons within three hours of play.

I, on the other hand, have spent three hours trying to make my first base, only to have someone with a crossbow or nailgun murder me and take my resources...over and over again. How do the Rust vets get past the naked stage so easily?

gather enough to get it started
2x2 with a triagle for airlock
dont gather lots, small runs
live near mountain or hilly terrain for more rock spawns
move away from your spawn point, thats where everyone can spawn from, you want distance
dont build near high value monuments, try things like scrapyard instead

Farm 1 stone nose then go to outpost trade it for a ♥♥♥♥ ton of wood then make a small base

Look for people farming. Kill them and hope they have enough resources to build a starter base. Farming is for losers.

Not all those videos are 100% accurate

It depends what type of server you're on. If it's a high pop official server then it's going to be very tough. Try a community or modded server, they are usually more forgiving.

this game take hours of play time to understand whats going on . around 800 hours you will just start to be okay . you wont be good at the game till you have atleast 2000hours

if you want guns fast, do not play freshly wiped servers. simple

From the way it looks watching a lot of streamers the key is installing an aim bot/ wall hacks (or even some weird NVIDIA filter combo), it's really advantageous being able to see in the dark whilst roaming in pitch black. /s
I hate to be cynical, but yeah. There's a lot of real sketchy crap on some of the videos I've seen too.

Your best chance of setting up with little opposition is to go to a low population server that's just recently been wiped. Then find a location with some resources far enough away from roads and monuments as not to attract too much attention, but not so far away from them that they'll be useless to you for farming up scrap and other necessities.
Slap down an airlocked 2 X 1 shack and immediately upgrade it to at least wood. It will be cramped at first, but you can fit everything you need in a relatively small space if you work it out. You can always add on or move and make a bigger base later. Trust me, don't get too attached to your base or your loot. Things can change rapidly.
Remember, too much smacking trees and rocks at one time will draw the roaches. Get just enough to get your base secured, then start the farming a little at a time.
If your not sure what that will take, try going into a PvE server and practice a little before you go PvP. You can practice undisturbed there, just don't try and kill anyone.
These vermin play on a "shoot on sight" premise which effectively negates a lot this game has to offer, so you need to kinda have a plan before you even enter a PvP server.
There's some pretty good vids on YouTube with a lot of helpful pointers. The veteran players just make it look easy because they've developed a strong routine.

The trading stone for wood at outpost is a good suggestion. If you get a paddle you can hit signs at outpost without getting shot by the guards. Then recycle and purchase wood.
