2x2 with a triagle for airlock
dont gather lots, small runs
live near mountain or hilly terrain for more rock spawns
move away from your spawn point, thats where everyone can spawn from, you want distance
dont build near high value monuments, try things like scrapyard instead
Your best chance of setting up with little opposition is to go to a low population server that's just recently been wiped. Then find a location with some resources far enough away from roads and monuments as not to attract too much attention, but not so far away from them that they'll be useless to you for farming up scrap and other necessities.
Slap down an airlocked 2 X 1 shack and immediately upgrade it to at least wood. It will be cramped at first, but you can fit everything you need in a relatively small space if you work it out. You can always add on or move and make a bigger base later. Trust me, don't get too attached to your base or your loot. Things can change rapidly.
Remember, too much smacking trees and rocks at one time will draw the roaches. Get just enough to get your base secured, then start the farming a little at a time.
If your not sure what that will take, try going into a PvE server and practice a little before you go PvP. You can practice undisturbed there, just don't try and kill anyone.
These vermin play on a "shoot on sight" premise which effectively negates a lot this game has to offer, so you need to kinda have a plan before you even enter a PvP server.
There's some pretty good vids on YouTube with a lot of helpful pointers. The veteran players just make it look easy because they've developed a strong routine.
