How do you keep horses healthy?

I got a horse, fed him to get his stamina up, logged off and when I came back on I realised it was at something like four health. I got a bunch of food to heal him and he ate a bit, but he only ate enough to fill his stamina bar, so he ended up dying anyway because he didn't heal much. My question is, how tf do you stop horses from dying if (when their stamina is full) they refuse to eat anything even if they're about to die?

Build a hitch and trough, place it, put food in it, and park the horse at it properly.
