If going solo, do not go to full population server at first. Without experience it is just death. Goto low pop server or server PVE to learn and then think about playing harder servers.
Good luck
If you plan on playing seriously this game , you'll have to farm ressources to avoid your bases getting destroyed by time.
The bigger the bases is , the more ressources you'll need.
You basicly have a month to learn as much DIY as you can , create your bases before the server wipe everything (You can't avoid the wipes) and go back to the beginning.
Playing solo is fun , playing with someone is better.
You can quickly end in a 12v1 situations or getting raid really quick without being able to do much.
Even tho this might seems scary after reading this , making friends is not that hard , even tho this community might be really toxic sometimes.
Hope this will help you in your choice of buying the game (or not).
EDIT: i've only played 150~~ hours currently as of writing this post .
