Join a battlefield server such as TnT or Rusticity.

Just play lots and rage lots. the more you get sh*t on the more you learn about positioning and team skills as well as how to hit them before they hit you.

Dont play on battlefield servers, the feeling of playing on a server like that is nothing like real pvp in vanilla rust.

I know this may seem odd to some people but you can learn a lot from battlefield/combat tag servers. As Mark said, the feeling is nothing like the actual thing but at least you can get a feel for each gun and slowly develop better gun control and possibly better game sense.

Ive noticed crouching doesnt really benefit you.. just makes only your head an easy target. Using scope isnt as good as holo unless your too far to put the red dot on them well. If you can .. put up a turret where you explore.. its just one of those suprise ! things when they try to loot you if you die.

Depends on what you are trying to do. What is special about rust is that every fight is unique. It's not a cs "you rush into tunnel and if you are quick enough you are set to get some kills"
I presume you're a solo player and you are on a medium low server.
First you define your enemy. Not all players KoS and you don't need to KoS everyone. Once that's clear and you know you will be engaging, find and use the weapon you are most comfortable with. Depending on the server size, most battles are close range. Pistol bullets are cheaper, assault does more damage but sometimes harder to control. Find your weapon that fits your engagement distance.
Turn on volume, turn off game music, use headphones, that way you can spot the enemy before he spots you and you lead your confrontation. Approach slowly, dashing from bush to bush.
Once you are in battle, move a lot as it's hard to compensate for recoil and for movement at the same time. If your enemy is in low cover, suppress him, you can score a ricochet kill. Always finish the job if you are not on your territory, that way you won't let the enemy look around and plan his respawn action.
Use dark clothes to give you some camo, fill all the clothing slots for maximum armor, prefer wolf helmet over facemask, it changes the silhouette of your head, that way it'll be harder for find you while scanning the environment.

If you fighting in a clan and suck, go to combat servers and just get some aggressive skills.

You learn it just by playng ... Combat tag or pvp wont give you it because you dont have the feeling of losing items because it took you nothing to get .. on the other hand vanila or modded gives you the feeling you need to be able to protect your self .. so what im sayng just play the game and learn from your mistakes

be aware of your mistakes and fix them. like the others said its experience so you just need to get out there and make the mistakes. there are so many scenarios and instances where you make a silly mistake that you say oh i couldve avoided that. but there are so many that you need to make the mistakes sometimes to be aware of them. just make sure you always know what to adjust or change othewise you will never get better.
