Help How to get off small boat to load Cargo?

I can't do cargo. I run into a small but yet huge problem. Every time I am on the small boat pulling side by side next to the cargo I can't get out the small boat. I don't know what key to press or if I am doing something wrong.

The only key I can press to get off the Boat is "Space bar" and every time I do that my guy just falls in the water and the boat keeps running and I get left in the middle of the ocean swimming.

What key are you supposed to press? or are you supposed to stop the engine and then get on?

WOuld like to do cargo at least one time. Appreciate the positive feedback I can get thanks.

You press e when you are near a ladder. This allows you to climb the ladder to get to the top.

So this happens automatically? OMG How stupid. I was trying to pull near Cargo by the ladder then leaving the little boat I was on by pressing space. My guy kept falling into the water and the boat would just leave.
