comment is kinda late but to anyone else who have this prob a quick fix is go to windows settings and search "microphone" then just click enter. Then click on "sound input device properties" and change "your input device" to your microphone.

this problem happened to me because i had played some oculus VR so the microphone was the oculus mice.

yo! i had the same problem. I fixed it by turning off NVIDIA DLSS. I didnt even have to restart the game!

It happens because your mic is innactive. You can fix it by join any Discord voice room and mute yourself there, but your mic will be active all the time so it will quick responce in the game too
This worked instantly. Do you know of any other way?

so ive tried all of this but nothing seems to work. i have been playing rust for a little over a year with the same pc, same microphone, same everything but for some reason about a week ago i started lagging every time i press my push to talk. ive changed the key becasue my push to talk is my push to mute in discord, but that didnt change anything. every other game i play on steam and other games like valorant and overwatch have no problems. sometimes it magically does work but on the same server 20 minutes later during the same play session, even during the same life it will stop. high pop servers, low pop servers, modded, official, they all have this bug. i cant figure out what is happening and hopefully someone here can help :er_uwu:

It worked for me. Just open your task bar and right click the little sound icon and click sounds->Recording->Right click on your preferred mic and set as default. I didnt even need to restart my pc
