Why is my ping so high?
Whenever I play this game my ping is usually around 80 (which is normal) then it randomly increases up to 2,000 then 10,000 then 30,000 then eventually it may go back down to 70 or so. But it usually stays at thousands for minutes at a time and a while after it goes back down, it increases again. When I play other games like fortnite, csgo, Apex etc. This never happens it always stays at a stable rate like 80.

I use my phone's mobile hotspot because I don't have wifi

My internet speed is usually at 0.7 mega bits per second

I don't know why it's only happening on this game though, if someone could give me tips to somehow lower internet usage or anything I can do in general would help a ton!

(I can't get better internet any time soon so there is nothing I can do about that)

Until I get ethernet connection? I don't have wifi, so it's not very possible.

Bump

it is "normal" becasue you are using a phone connection.

you are not the only person using the phone network.....

Also you argument "x is bad because A,B,C does not do it", is known as a "fallacy"

RUST has a certain network footprint, that may look like a network flood to the provider
Specifically the massive number of connections it makes & the use of UDP which it relies on for sync.

UDP is NON-guaranteed delivery....., which all networks dump at the expence of TCP

so if you hit a "bump" and UDP gets lost , your computer goes mad and sends a load more, which causes the network to retaliate by throtteling your connection.

get a "real" wire & router to handle it better

Any possible way I can somehow lower the amount of internet i'm using? like is there something my pc is running that I don't know about, or is there a way I can play rust without using so much bandwidth, like if there are less people or if i'm playing on a smaller server. That type of thing.
Razorfish Apr 20, 2019 @ 9:28pm
look... it is simple...
TCP/IP V4 runs a certain way.....
a way that was invented mainly by ex-hippies wearing hiking boots & beards way back before
mobile phones & wifi and "hackers"

since then a lot of "strap-on" work has gone on, to prevent "bad actors" from taking the whole network down.

RUST is badly written... it is a simple as that,
It might make as many as 3,000 connections to other hosts, for no other reason than to find "servers", that is a MASSIVE amount of connections and UDP traffic for a mobile phone to handle

Depending on your provider, some idiot making thousands of connections from a mobile phone... might look a bit aggressive to their automated protection systems.....
So...... they may "throttle" the connection (your high ping)

OR , you may be in a bad zone for traffic routing, like maybe when a big bus goes past your shack.

it is likely a function of the game design AND TCP/IP v4 protocol... and your provider.

Even if I am connected to my own server, 1 M from my client, using network cable......
during a game there is over :

1,500 connections from RUST to outside..........
379 UDP port connections

that sort of traffic, is not normally what a mobilephone WIFI hotspot is designed for.

On most boxes or pages for games it mentions "Broadband internet connection required".
You need a physical connection at some point, of which you can end up to the PC as Ethernet, WiFi, or PoE (Power over Ethernet) devices which are more than likely going to end up as ethernet.

Phones are not reliable for this sort of thing.

rusts old engine requires alot of bandwith to play, most games send and received data at around 100-300kbs rust uses over 1mbs on a server with 150+ people. the game is tracking every player on the map so thats why i'd assume it uses so much, your mobile hot spot will work for a while but is probably ping spiking because it can't handle a constant over a mb of data being sent and received. thats what i'm thinkin anyways

My problems were solved after i started sharing my phones internet via usb cord

Okay thanks man, what I just don't understand is when my ping is sometimes low but then it dramatically increases until I can't play anymore, then when I rejoin the server it's low for a while then goes back up. Why is it low when I start playing the game? Also do you think playing on a smaller size map or a server with less players would help? Thanks

Is that what you currently use today? Also how good is your bandwidth, what down speeds are you getting?

I get 10mbps at the lowest and rust never has network lag for me. Before i used wireless wifi and had constant issues with lag and disconnects.

10mbps is more than enough to run this game and unfortunately mine is less than 1. I may try to tether through usb but I don't know if it will make a difference.

I've tried tethering through usb. Nothing changed and I still have that disgusting frustrating 10 minutes delay hundreds thousands of ping.

Also what I've noticed is that my phone gets over 3 megabits per second but my PC gets less than 1. Is there a way they can both get the same speed?
