Rust
Ram Usage and Un-playable
Okay, so I haven't touched this godforsaken game in about 3 years and when I finally do, I can't even ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ play it anymore.(Like it takes 20min to ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ load into a 200 man server and when I do the textures don't load properly and after about 2minutes my game crashes into oblivion) My RAM usage goes to 99% and caps at 5.9gb and I have 8gb RAM. I have never had this problem in the past and have always been able to keep a steady 90fps-110fps no problem on the setting "Fantastic". I have a i5-4570k processor and amd r9-270x OC VE. Am I literally being pushed out of the playability because the developers keep making the game high on performance or is it that the game is soooo poorly optimized and ♥♥♥♥ that it's literally unplayable unless I invest into a $1,500 computer? Please respond for the love of God...

You people really need to get it in your head that the OS and initial apps use a large chunk of your 8GB RAM, so of course a 200 pop server that'll push you more than likely far beyond the 9GB usage due to the entity count associated with 200 people; 11GB-14GBs more than likely.

Anyway, it's unplayable only because you lack the requirements to play the game without issues.

If you had 16GBs of RAM the loading times would be up to 2-5 minutes depending on the HDD used, its speed, and how much of it you're already using. Having 16GBs of RAM and an SSD would be as little as 30 seconds to fully load into a server.

This isn't counterstrike, league, or fortnite; stop treating games the same or that you need an expensive PC; you just need the RAM and preferably an SSD ($20-$25 for a starter SSD).

There actually is a legit fps increase guide that I used to make rust run better. Went from 25~ fps to ~50fps with better graphics. I'll go find it give me a minute.

https://www.reddit.com/r/playrust/comments/cdu7ct/how_to_improve_your_fps_and_make_your_game_more/

Use "The middle ground" config (But read the entire thread).

But set music to 0, change your sensitivity to what you use, and I think I also turned off shadows. Otherwise yes, I doubled FPS AND got better visuals.

I ended up uninstalling tho because the cheaters are still rampant...

ALSO make sure occlusion culling is ON. Do this in the config, the game wont save it after you set to read only. Its something like occlusion_culling_env. The config says 0, set it to 1.

I think I also turned on sharpen. I turned down the "2"shadows setting to 0, and the other "3" setting to 0.

Before you replace your cfg (I checked, it is legit, nothing added), rename your current config to .bak or whatever, so you can always revert.

Orion, you are a moron. I'm not treating it like any other game nor did I specify if I have Rust on an SSD or a HDD. I think that you need to get it through your head that entities do not matter in this case and if it did my game would crash if it would require said amount RAM you specified. Also not to assume things, pretty sad! As well as the fact you can defaultly change those settings as well. Which I did to no avail and maxing out the game is running better than if I ran it on "Fast" which makes no sense at all.

Exactly, assuming everyone's running the 64bit version, windows 7/8/10 alone use about 2gb of ram.

If you have only 8gb then you're trying to run Rust with 6gb of ram, and again, that's assuming nothing else is utilizing your RAM other than the OS.

Now bare in mind, by default it will bleed over into a users page file which forces your hard drive to act as RAM but ideally you want to avoid that, You want to run the entire program off your RAM. Why? Hard drives are not only slower than RAM, this can lead to general instability problems including but not limited to hitching and crashes.

In order to avoid that, you need sufficient RAM.

20 minutes loading time is using an HDD with low memory, it's common knowledge at this point, and seeing as you're playing with 8GB and having issues and complaining on the forum then attacking people with valid points; the only moron here is you.

When you're at full memory you use a page file, which is where it makes up for the lack of RAM which causes increased load times, random fps drops, lesser performance. You're using 3-4.5GBs of memory with the OS and apps loaded. What is a greater number? 5.9GBs or 3.5GB-5GB? Obviously the first part; you're using too much, you have half the RAM required to not run without issues.

In fact, take it down to 4GB, install a 1GB GPU as well. Let me know how that works out, since you think I'm the moron yet you have practically 4GB of usable memory and cry about the load time and texture loading speed on the forum.

Takes me 1-2 minutes on an HDD 16GB RAM, 30 seconds on SSD 16GB RAM.

This.
Assuming theyre only using 2GB and they're wondering why it's at 99% with 5.9GB yet scream other people are idiots - it's a no wonder why they know nothing lol.

Once again you prove my point Orion, you don't know what OS I am on nor how much of my total RAM is being used by 'apps' as you put it. You are of no help and should neck yourself lmao. You also have no idea how bad Rust leaks memory either which you have not stated once. So your knowledge in this field is obsolete and indolent.

You have no point and regardless of OS you're clearly capping your memory out

That and mentioning crashing.

Get 16GBs of RAM and an SSD.

Or keep trying to be an edgy alt.

THIS
hard to help.

:steamfacepalm:

weak cpu.

weak gpu.

low ram.

most likely not using an ssd.

there is your issues.

-----------------------------------------

get 16GB ram (or higher)

run your OS on its own ssd.

run your games (and your game apps) on their own ssd.

problem mostly solved.

Obsolete and INDOLENT? Lmfao.
this is a good example of a console player

Well, when OPis below the recommended amount of RAM, its no surprise that hes having a rough time. They list those specs on the store page for a reason.
