how to join a game with a friend?

just bought the game to play with my friend, can't see any options to party up or at least make sure we join the same server

am i missing something or are you telling me i just have to randomly hope the game spawns me near my friend?

Just have your friend tell you the name of the server, then use the search function at the bottom to find it. Once in the server, have him put you a sleeping bag down and then assign it to you. Press F1 and type: kill

That will suicide your character and you can respawn in the sleeping bag your friend put down.
