How do I use the bucket lift/elevator?

Well, I fell from the top and I died. lol

I know the bucket elevator can be "openned" and "closed" as a door when you get close to the bucket. But when you're up and the bucket is down, or when you're down and the bucket is up, how do you pull/push the bucket next to you?
Sorry the bad english, but I think it's possible to understand my question.

The bucket sits at the bottom of the cave and can only be started from there. It travels up, pauses momentarily, then back down it goes. There is no way to access the bucket from the top.

The bucket is a 1 use thing :/
If it's your only way up then you go up and the cave will turn into a trap.

if you go a bit further into the cave from the top of the lift, you can find a hole that will ultimately lead you to the exit
