the rope is a elevator. There is other tunnels in there.

nahh just jump from above and right click. if you die try again it takes some practise

I thought I could hang on to the rope by jumping into it and "use" it. I could not, it was fun flying for 3 seconds though.

It's not even worth your time spent trying to traverse through the cave system. I guess if you just want to see it and explore, whatever, but it's totally not worth the time wasted going down there.
