How do servers work in this game?

A friend and i are looking at Rust but want to know how the servers are set up? Can we create one and set rules or are we stuck joining others? How big are the maps and what type of player limits are there?

You have to pay to own a server. Officials servers are ran by facepunch community servers are exactly as they sound and most usually have active admins and there is all kinds of modded and role play servers. Map size depends and what the admin chooses there's hapis island there's procedural map an barren. Some servers have up to 400 players. Some of this I could be wrong on but I have 1k hours have anymore questions or want someone to want me help you just add me

So I assume when a server gets wiped its a full wipe?

well with full wipe it means all the houses and such gets removed, its like starting from square 1.

it is possible to make a free rust server but its hard and not recommended to do so as when u make it the free way, u have to manually update the server, rust and all the plugins/addons u have with ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of commands/variables..

there are a few good server host providers out there, 1 easier or little bit harder to configure than the others but not as hard as to make a free server... i can list the cheapest i know and the one i use right now but that site require a little more knowledge about plugins and how to install them properly, there are also 1 site that require u to do like nothing, like just choose a plugin and install it, after that the server and plugins autoupdates themself whenever there are a update for the game.
