[FIXED] Rust disconnects me from the internet when joining server after update [HELP] [TECHNICAL SUPPORT]
Sorry if there are other posts like this on the forum, i've read almost everything post i can find here and on reddit and i cant seem to find a solution or someone whose problem matches mine haha. Ty in advance for any help.

So after the most recent update i cant seem to connect to any rust server for more than a minute without getting a massive ping spike and having all my applications that use the internet disconnect.

Im sure this isnt a hardware problem since i've been playing perfectly fine regularly for the past 2 weeks and i've never had an issue like this on any game before.

I'm fairly confident this isn't an ISP problem either since i dont seem to have a problem with my internet until the very moment i start to "receive data" from rust. I hadnt' had any connection issues with the game until now and nothing i've tried so far has seemed to work (list below)

dns flush, reinstalling the game, setting higher priority in task manager, verifying game files, restarting router, connecting directly to modemn, restarting pc, changing steam ingame server browser settings from 5000ping to 500, and a few other things.

not sure what to try next or even why this started to happen. if anyones got any ideas or had this problem before id love if you could share some advice. I'm really enjoying the game and sucks that i can't play it at all anymore :(

sorry for any grammar/spelling/formating mistakes. I don't post often and im typing this from phone.

EDIT: so the solution i got was to connect directly to the server i was trying to join via the console commands

hit f1 and enter the following, where <server ip> is the ip address of the server you'd like to join.

client.connect <server ip>

you can find a detailed list of servers on this website

Sounds like it might be causing your network driver to crash. Have you checked the WIndows Event Viewer logs for errors? Maybe it will shed some light on the situation of what's happening. I was going to suggest that maybe it was a router being crashed, but as you said you've hard wired directly to the modem and it's still happening.

Short of checking Windows logs I'm not sure what else you can do other than maybe tinkering with your network adapter settings to see if that helps any. I do know the game's network engine is obsolete and hasn't been maintained in years so it's very well possible that something going on with that is causing your network adapter to drop connection. My guess is the network device drivers are being crashed by Rust. If you have any network interface cards kicking around, try one of them and see what happens.

This is definitely a new issue, never seen this pop up on the steam forums. Best listen to borg, my guess is probably worse than his.

Thanks a ton for your detailed reply man, really apperciate it.

I did update my drivers before hand so im sure it wasn't that, however i did try to manually connect to the server i wanted to play on (client.connect <serverip>) and now it seems to work without a problem. Not sure what caused all this but i'm not complaining since i can FINALLY play now :)

It seemed strange so i was looking at the net graph and there were some spikes, when i opened the graph details it just started to work :D kinda creeped me out so i searched for similiar stuff.... also my net stops sometimes during the game on the server, i just enter and exit the chat with enter button and it works... strange

Is anyone else getting the same issue? It's only happening when I launch Rust. Any other game on Steam works fine.

2020 and the problem still exist...

Its a driver issue, manualy update your wlan drivers or bios and it should be fixed. It also only happens to specific motherboards, if you use an networkcard it wont be an issue.

I have this problem. When RUST launched I cant even open any page on web browser. Also cant see servers on the list. so its killing my wifi conncetion

Steam client options > in-game and lower "In-Game server browser: Max pings / minute" option and try again. Scans servers slowly, but your internet won't crash.

New problem. 2020. Update that introduced the ranch. I can load into rust but the second I load into a server I get timed out. No servers appear and browsers stop working. Discord calls work half the time. Nothing to do with my router, everything else works. It's most likely my drivers. When I restart SmartByte service in task manager it fixes the connection. I have updated my drivers manually since Windows says they are up to date, still nothing. At first it was only with a few servers but I am unable to load into any server. Haven't been able to play in a few weeks now. I have reinstalled the game. I have tried every fix from every thread I could find. No dice.
