Defiances was the weakes for me, it was more action focus and Raziels levels where mostly the same "go there, visit the same room to get another reaver upgrade", felt more like a chore than gameplay. They got rid of the puzzles completly (you could argue the SR2 puzzles aren´t puzzles either, but an attempt was made).
It had its moments, the story was nice but the gameplay itself was meh.
Well, PS1's Soul Reaver 1 with its puzzle block also falls into the same category. It was infuriating.
Yes it was all puzzle blocks but they did it right. They added with each puzzleblock another layer to it, so it wasn´t nearly as repetitive and it added to a mechanic you already known.
You start with simple pushing and go over to stacking and rotating them to match the tubes inside.
That is good game desing, introduce a mechanic and build it up for a greater challenge, thats why a game like Portal was a suprise hit.
Like I said, I do love Defiance, I don't think the Soul Reaver arc could have ended in a better way, it's one of my favourite games ever made, and I do agree with you in the sense it is the most polished of the three (sorry, but screw both Blood Omen games, I couldn't care less about those), I just don't think polish equates to overall quality and, in that sense, I really can't state it is the "best" of the series.
I just meant polish as in hardly any glitches; no more falling through collision, no more unwinnable games because you scared away some stupid crows, or saved in the wrong spot, or the horrible framerate issues from the original Blood Omen.
BO1 was more like a gothic zelda game. Which I enjoyed, don't get me wrong, but it's a completely different game and going to require completely different effort to remaster that players who enjoy the 3d platformer style may have absolutely no interest in.
