There is no turn based mode.

This isn't a turn based game, it's a regular first person RPG that's locked to a grid.

Turn-based mode would make kiting (and dodging) impossible which would only make it worse.

Thats actually why I like this game. You have to act fast and it makes the fighting more intense.

They chose this model for fighting, not much you can do about it than playing old style games. This one requires the 2x2 dance to play. Still pretty enjoyable though.

The closest thing to turn based play you can do in LoG2 is playing on "Easy" mode.
The monsters will then act/walk/attack really slow.

And do nearly zero damage.

Legend of Grimrock has always felt like the true successor to the older Might and Magic games. The gameplay is basically the same, except in Grimrock you can't hit Enter to go to "turn based" mode. Much better this way IMO, it forces you to really pay attention to your surroundings when engaging an enemy.

M&M may have been an influence, but it's really modeled after the Dungeon Master Series.

I'll take your word for it, the only games I've played that are similar to Grimrock are the Might and Magic games.

that's kind of funny really.. it's not intense nor does it involve real thinking.. the game revolves around how quickly you can with either Q or E after you glitched an enemy out.. whats fun about just trying to circle around an enemy by quickly rotating on a stupid grid? or you just move, turn, attack, move, turn, move, turn, move, turn, attack, move, turn, move, turn, attack... that is just plain stupid gameplay and it's not real strategy and it does not require strategic thinking.. it only requires quickly realizing do i hit either Q or E.

Maybe try playing the game on Hard or fighting more than one enemy? Once you get past the first 1-2 areas, you suddenly start facing encounters with multiple enemies or are forced to fight in tight places. The Graveyard and Kaelbreach Bog are perfect examples of this. One area you'll encounter high HP and damaging enemies in confined areas, the other area has enemies that completely ignore terrain and move in mysterious ways.

Not to mention all the enemy types that move as fast/faster than you, with ranged or debilitating attacks. Nothing is more "fun" when suddenly you can't move because 2 guys are paralyzed or someone broke their leg and are now over encumbered.

It was called the "Dungeon Master Two Step" back around '85 when Dungeon Master was released by FTL for the Atari 1040 STE and Amiga
