They can only be hurt by the dispel spell or the etheral dagger found in the graveyard.
Perhaps polar opposite elements can damage each other, while the same element heals, and any others deal a flat zero damage.
Red numbers seem to mean bonus damage, fire on ice elementals. Opposites are antagonistic in LoG as described by the game lore. Using ice bolt on those flying suicide-fireball-monstrosities is highly effective.
If you get the hub key from the area near the beach, wait for the elemental to be right near the hub, then put the key in and get out of the way. The elemental will be transported to the Hub, and if you go through the teleporter, you'll teleport into it and kill it instantly (no XP though). Hope it helps anyone still playing this!
