Grimrock 1 vs 2
Ive not played the first one but this caught my attention recently. I was wondering if i'd be missing anything important if i skipped the first game?

You'd be missing a good game, but as far as plot relations I haven't seen any relation yet.

Yeah, you're probably right. If this is more of the same with extra content & features, i wouldn't be able to go back to the first one, noticing the things that are lacking.

I'd recommend skipping the first one. I replayed Grimrock 1 before this came out, and it just made the 2nd one feel stale. The game is a HUGE upgrade from the first in terms of comat and meaninful builds, as well as the overall "cheapness factor" of puzzles is gone.

Grimrock 1 was a nice game but running through dungeons can get pretty tedious after a while. The new game has a pretty vast exterior world with day/night cycle and plays pretty nonlinear so far. I'd also say it's quite a bit larger than Grimrock 1.

So - if only getting one game, I'd recommend the second - they are also completely separate story-wise so you won't miss any relevant plot if skipping the first...

LoG2 could be better on any point than LoG1, but LoG1 is still a great RPG, its gameplay density is just amazing and unmatched, even classics use some more fillers. I have some doubts that LoG2 which is quite bigger reaches the same density.

LoG1 has some nice little story elements, such as Toorum and his many notes you find and the last boss was a nice surprise.

Legend of Grimrock 2 is an indirect sequel (at least so far; haven't finished the game yet) to the first Legend of Grimrock, so it seems that the original can be skipped without missing relevant content, yes.

However, it's worth considering that the first one provides a learning ramp to the franchise, as it's slightly easier and gameplay is much more linear than the second. Legend of Grimrock 2 is definitely harder and with many new/improved features, and a bunch of experience from the first has certainly helped me play it.

Basically, LoG 2 is superior in most aspects, but the original still offers a solid (learning) experience.

PS: I think the biggest thing the original had that was more powerful than the second was the atmosphere. Being in a claustrophobic prison with the only path available being down can be quite creepy. The second is more of an open-world, and while you are indeed stranded on an island, it's way too huge to feel lost. It's pretty much a map with different areas you can travel to when you so wish. It's not bad, just different. :-)

    You would be missing:
  1. LoG1 which is a great game!
  2. A unique thriller-like atmosphere nowhere to be found in LoG2.
  3. You won't understand some of the sweet, small details in the LoG2.
  4. A training, a learning expierience in a specific way of thinking needed to play the game. LoG2 is much, much larger then LoG1 so it requires better management skills of the inventory.
  5. A good reference as to how to create a good party and how not to do it.

I on the other hand feels that Grimrock 1 had tighter design, more enjoyable puzzles and a better atmosphere, though that last point must be given up for outside access i suppose. There are many more areas in Grimrock 2 that, to me, just feels uneccesary than there was in Grimrock 1.

All is a matter of taste I guess. I like how LoG2 feels open and vast. I like LoG1 but I personally love LoG2. Also the the creepy atmosphere of LoG1 is not present in LoG2 so its not like 2 is 1 and more. Some things from 1 are just not there in 2. They shouldn't be compared as to which is better i think, 1 is much more thriller/horror themed, tense and jeez I felt shivers down my spine oh so many times.

Obviously you didn'tsee the true ending. Thus don't know how the 2 titles are related.
