So someone on their team did the whole entire port to Mac? If you look into game programming on these three platforms, (unless the port was using the Metal API, which I doubt, because it is really new), it will be quite clear that the step from Mac to Linux is noticably smaller than the one from Win to Mac.
You don't think it's possible that the devs simply do not want to spend any extra effort on producing a Linux binary? The few game devs I come across tend to range from oblivious to openly hostile towards GNU/Linux. I don't quite get it, but it is what it is. Apologies to the LoG team if they do not have these sentiments. I am generalizing here.
As for WINE: The game runs, and is playable. The performance is very poor, however. I tested the native Windows binary on a much weaker machine, and the general performance, particularly the save/load times were much better.
That's a copy'n'paste from their forum. You can double-check it here if you like: http://www.grimrock.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=8424&start=20#p85366
Yeah, well. That's sadly typical.
Quality games on Linux are few and far between, and this one is most definitely a quality game. LoG 1 was one of the better ports too.
1st: LoG 1 and 2 play in the same universe but their story lines are totally independent.
2nd: 3 posts up is the statement of the devs and it has not changed since it was made.
From what little I've played of the second part, despite the very similar mechanics, the games are actually very different from one another. They aren't a continuous storyline either.
If you are into this type of game, I would highly recommend LoG 1.
Then again, if you are really into the first part, it sort of sucks to not to be able to play the second without going through a WINE experience which is just glitchy enough that I've gradually just lost interest.
I can only imagine the nightmare with a DirectX, Microsoft specific engine.
Also, the developer seems to refer to releasing EULA assets, but not the game code, as "Open Sourcing." "Open Source" itself is, in fact, a fully corporate oriented trademark.
We should look to Frictional Games, which has released the sources of the Penumbra and Amnesia games under free software licences.
