Any news on the third game?
I loved the first one, the 2nd one is really nice but for some reason saving takes longer.

This needs to be an mmorpg, It can work flawlessly.

Many years ago, the devs specifically said they didn't want to make a 3rd one because they didn't think they could significantly improve on the 2nd. If that's changed somehow (it's been ten years since this came came out), I haven't heard anything about it and I wasn't expecting to.

I hope you're being randomly sarcastic about the MMORPG thing. I really don't see how a party-based, tile-based puzzle game could possibly be reworked as an MMORPG.

Nothing is impossible, I can see that it can work if the developers know what will be done.
I also read that and I know it will be hard to improve it more but tbh games don't just need to be improved, they just need to expand.
no one should have that developer mindset that their new game needs to be improved and better than the previous game because that's when you just stop with your game series. (I hope these developers will have a better mindset than that)
a good game isn't about the improvement, It's about the story and how the game is, I can see this game having a big story and lore towards it but finishing the first game and just started the second, I don't see what the story actually is.
Most games like this back 10 years ago just have gameplay and not really a story.

Making grimrock an mmorpg would be ass. Why do people think tacking on mmo mechanics somehow makes the game better?

That's when you get infinite siries like Assasin's Creed. If you like it, that's great. Some people like an ending to their stories and room for speculation to their lore. And some people like to create such lore and stories (see Dark Souls for example). Honestly, it's respectable, they don't turn their creations into a sort of soap opera, thus the artistic value of the series remains high.
I understand the desire to know more about the thing you like, but good things must not be endless or they lose their quality.
You can get a ton of good mods here on Steam or on Nexus for this game, you'll get new stories with nearly the same gameplay (with some tweaks most of the time).

True, Yeah, Lore is always the best in video games and if you keep making them it will get bland.

I'd be happy if they'd just release new Adventures/Dungeons for GrimRock 1 and 2

I don't think it would be too difficult to improve on Grimrock 2 by adding settlements, shops & taverns for the sequel. Perhaps even small cities with narrow streets and repeating buildings as in Ishar 2, which was released 30 years ago by what I assume were a small team and the main reason I enjoy games like Grimrock in the first place.

I'd say it wouldn't be an improvement but rather a different setting. The two games are about exploring hostile places where everything is out to get you. No allies, no shops with useful equipment, no taverns with food.
It'd have a completely different vibe.

A different vibe is sometimes what you want in a sequel, I.e. Grimrock 2 has outdoor areas, which is both an improvement and a different vibe to the original, as you don't feel trapped in similar looking dungeons for the entire game; yet you can still venture into dungeons. The next logical step imo is to expand it further by rejoining civilization and including shops, which a lot of people have been asking for -- but still include the tried and true crawler formula.

The environment is different for sure, but the feeling of isolation and being trapped is the same. I think that was a great way to make the game different without changing its overall atmosphere.

A town, though? An economy? The possibility that you could just become a farmer or butcher or a shoemaker? Would be pretty hard to include these and still be a Grimrock game. Not saying I'm against it... just saying, if someone can pull it off somehow, I'd be impressed.

We did functionally get shops. Golden Keys are a limited currency that allow you to buy certain items from various location, and you have to choose whether to spend them immediately or to wait for a better "shop". And if you finish the game, the Master key is functionally a big treasure that allows you to buy all the items you couldn't afford before.

The devs really did do a pretty great job improving on the first game. No wonder they're sceptical about any new game being significantly better than this one.
Hollow Heart May 2, 2024 @ 5:49am
Well, if instead of golden doors they made a trader character, it would be pretty cool. Same limited ammount of currency, same wares (so more often than not the wares are some unique armor or weapons), but now it's an actual character.
They should not be a simple person though, I think Grimrock should still maintain the feeling of being trapped somewhere unfamilliar. The trader could be of some semi-intelligent race, or maybe of fully intelligent but rare and a simple motive to trade with you. This could work well I imagine.

Mods such as Eye of the Atlantis & Lost City/Guardians/Final Adventure already did a lot of this and are a MASSIVE improvement on the vanilla game because of it. If you haven't played them yet, my question would be, why not exactly? :steamfacepalm:

User created content can be good, but a lot of the time it's awful. You can't necessarily trust the reviews people other people might like things that you don't like.

Takes a big time investment to try mods, and it might not pay off at all. That's pretty much the main reason why people aren't willing to try them.

While I wish there had been a much-needed balance pass, I'm content with the game as is. I can play other things the rest of the time.
