No, I don't have any mods installed. Differences were OS (w7 to w10) and possibly game patches in last 20 months.
I'll ask again: what mod are you playing or what modification have you done to the game?
This is from the log (not enough memory is sort of confusing as it shows plenty of ram left):
Total Mem: 8127 MB
Free Mem: 5323 MB
....
Loading main campaign dungeon
=== Software Failure ===
not enough memory
Only large custom mods which include custom assets run into this problem. For example simply starting "Eye of the Atlantis" mod requires 1.5 Gig while the game's own campaign hardly goes past 1.3 Gigs at any given point.
The only reasons that loading a regular LoG2 campaign save game causes an "out of memory" crash is that the game files are either corrupt or the game has been tempered with.
Only once have i gotten out of memory error (on loading), other times it crashed on saving.
I have now installed nad tried Grimrock unlimited mod, played for half an hour without crash. That just confuses me more.
I'll try to uninstall the game and delete all files, then reinstall.

I get this error even when i change something in the options.
As far as your crash goes:
Are you playing a custom mod? (your message indicates a mod with a scripting error)
Do you run the current unaltered game version that is distributed by Steam?
Sorry, can't find something that only happens on your system.
The unmodified v2.2.4 requests 1.1 GB RAM for starting a new game of the campaign.
Starting a new game of the Grimrock Unlimited mod requires 0.9 GB RAM.
If more RAM gets requested something fishy is going on in your system.
You could change the game options which means the game starts up fine.
You also tried to save by menu or F5 which means you were in the game, playing it.
Let Steam verify your installation; maybe even try a different Steam server.
