Sonic frontiers before it was already highly regarded even though it was acknowledged it needed work. Shadow generations IS that work.
That doesn't mean it's as good as something like Devil May Cry 5 where you have the combination of quality *and* content, but it's super approachable and the quality of what is there is immaculate, so it's good.
I don't think it's the best 3D Sonic game myself due to the fact that there just isn't enough there, but it's probably the best one pound for pound. If they can provide something at this level of quality that is about three to five times longer, I think it'll easily take the top mantle. Gotta have some good tech (as in player technique, not technology) to do it though. At the hardcore end of play this game is pretty much exclusively carried by spear glide (and that's probably unintentional). Plus only half the main levels are actually ones people care about for speed running purposes, so... yeah, really have to stretch that 30 minutes worth of levels to get your money's worth.
Steam's rating steam is purely a thumbs up or down and like someone above mentioned there is almost nothing to dislike in Shadow Generations unless you're one of the types in the vocal minority screaming about censorship in the Sonic Generations portion. But even then you see it in the reviews as a negative point that is over weighed by all the good points in Shadow Generations.
Overwhelmingly Positive is high.
Yup. Not saying anything new, but doesnt mean its a 10/10 (I personally have it at 9.2), but it means 97% of the 7,394 people who rated it at time of posting would recommend it
Shadow Generations is definitely very good but honestly a positive rating for Sonic game just means they didn't piss people off with gimmicks.
Not quite on here, but an increasingly common sentiment im seeing is that a game that can combine the polish and quality of shadow generations, and the scope, ambition, and quantity of sonic frontiers, not to mention the sheer “HOLY ****!” Of the titan bosses, has a VERY good chance of being a GOTY contender. Not a players choice, a goty contender.
evidenced by sonic adventure 2 ditched the entire sonic adventure format for heroes.
sonic generations ditched the entire generations format for lost world.
Oh yeah do not think I’m not aware of that. The sonic generations side needing work, the fact that the og gens remaining via a bundle reeking of a compromise, denuvo, the complex order bonuses, etc are tantamount evidence to it.
