The Shadow part has a recap of his story but not having played or if you don't know anything about the previous games you are not going to understand a lot of references. The game is good on it's own but having context makes it even better. Sonic Generations is basically a "Sonic Best Hits" but the story is pretty straightforward and not really related to the stuff that came before, the stages don't really have a lore behind them and I don't remember the bosses having dialogue either.

Sonic Generations is a great first game.

Ignore the clown that is going to come in here complaining about "censorship."

I'd recommend Mania. This sadly is a censored version of Sonic Generations from 2011 with a pretty poor redub/rewrite. The Shadow stuff is confusing if you haven't been following the franchise already for a couple decades now.

The game comes with an entire backstory recap and the animation prequel LOL.

hell yeah bro

This is an excellent start to the franchise, absolutely. You get 2 games full of callbacks to the entire franchises history, and it's super easy to pick your favorite part and explore that game's origin next.

The only real problem I can think of, is that it does throw a lot of characters at you but doesn't really explain how or why they're important. They're just...sonics friends and that's usually all they're portrayed as.

And even then, the story itself is easy to follow. The places he revisits aren't actually important to the plot at all, and aren't acknowledged outside maybe the first one, if you want to count it.

The story is simple but pretty good at telling you who is who, how they're important to Shadow, and why

I mean, generations isnt all that & honestly wouldnt be **** without its predecessors to copy/paste from considering generations IS an anniversary game that doesn't truly do anything of its own thats new or original let alone pioneered the franchise in any meaningful way. everything generations does previous sonic games did better - story ? done better elsewhere, modern sonic? done better else where, classic sonic? done better elsewhere, levels? done better elsewhere

even with all that said, generations is a good game to go into blindly. its one of the better sonic games.

on its own it's a pretty solid game, however as a celebration piece it kind of lacks the "wow" factor for someone who hasn't played the series up to then

it's not make or break, it's a good game all around and difficulty-wise a great starting point for a new player, the impact of the references will just lose a bit of their power

You know what was poor ? The original writing the one who rewrote Ian Flynn know what he's talking about and try to keep consistency with the previous games. The 2 og writers didn't example: how the ♥♥♥♥ Sonic forget green hill and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ chemical plant how do you forget about the factory who makes blue chemicals ?
It's like if you went to Chernobyl and come back 10 years later and don't recognize the place.

Wait for a big sale, and play the original version instead.

Yeah, on top of that the time when Ken Pontac and Warren Graff were the main writers of Sonic games (Generations, Colors, Lost World) were the worst times to like Sonic. They've made him an a-hole, never cared for any characters and were eager to put a ton of bad jokes where they shouldn't be. I personally don't like some of the rewrites, but come on, that's a Generations we're talking about. Everybody was mad about how simple its story was.

And yeah, Sonic Generations and Shadow Generations are the best starting games for new fans. They both have most popular levels remade from the games like Sonic 1-3 & Knuckles, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic'06, Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors. Bosses, two gameplays in SG, story recap in ShG (what he was doing in the games he participated) and so on.

Just play Shadow the Hedgehog. Or just play the numerous mods and fan games that are available.

Paying nearly full price for basically DLC, is a waste.

This is a really solid first entry in the series to start with. I'd recommend jumping around the series as it catches your eye from here. Ignore the people complaining it's just overpriced DLC, this is a solid remaster of a great game featuring an entire game of equal length. You're buying two Sonic games for the price of one, I think you'll have a great time, and it'll give you plenty to do as you get used to what is an extremely different style of game from most of the industry.
